USAFA parents on FB?

I'm asking for a friend who is trying to connect...is there a facebook group for AFA moms or parents? USMA moms have connected on fb for years (West Point Moms), but a cursory search on fb didn't find anything. If you have any info, could you please provide. Thanks!
 
Mom3boys (me too :D) I haven't seen one, and if there isn't, there should be. Moderators, how to get that happening?
 
Maybe there's just not that high a level of interest in facebook by air force academy parents. Nothing to say you can't start one yourself.

From my experience; while most of the cadets have a facebook account, they use it as their PERSONAL socializing. Most cadets might belong to their class FB page, but most aren't active. Same with forums like this one. There are more than 4200 ACTIVE CADETS. How many of them do you think come to this forum. Hell; more PARENTS come to this forum to ask questions and such than actual applicants.

I can honestly say that in the last 8 years that my kids have been in college/school away from home, (Including currently, my son), I don't think I've ever read or followed anything on Facebook about them that had to do with school. The only thing I see on either facebook is personal, non school related. Snowboarding, skiing, surfing, socializing, etc...

But definitely; if you think there might be a big interest by parents, start up a facebook page. All of them at one time or another had to have someone start it.

there are groups for AFA parents. My Life is Cadet Parent is one for all classes and each class has one as well..at least in recent years from what I understand. There are also Class Year parents pages as well.
 
Maybe we USMA moms are more helicopterish! haha. We got together on facebook in 2008. We talk about what to wear to WP events, ask about transportation, share boodle ideas, ask for help rescuing stranded cadets, etc... We have a separate page that is a baking support group, where we send over 300 boxes a month to deployed of all branches. Via facebook, a few moms planned a 5K at ring weekend and raised a little over 50K for Fisher House...We've used fb as a way to connect and meet up w/ each other regionally, so we can know each other in "real life" as well. So, for West Point Moms, facebook has been both fun and a source of service to "pay it forward."

Oops left out an important word..Class Year Parents Prayer pages. so for example, as a parent of a Class of 2016 cadet, I have 3 parents FB groups to get support and information from.
 
USAFA Parent Facebook pages

There are several:

My Life is Cadet Parent: USAFA Parents United
USAFA Class of 2015: Parents
USAFA Class of 2015 Prayer Parents

All of the above are very active. And I believe there are pages for most of the other classes - but I don't have those exact names (since my DS is Class of 2015). If you join the My Life is Cadet Parent: USAFA Parents United page, there will be people from other classes that can give you the other Class pages.
 
Also

USAFA Community FB page also has a regular website. USAFAFAMNET regular website. Each class had a FB page. After admission there is a forum on WEBGUY. :thumb:
 
If only you could understand how freaked up all of this engagement makes your cadets/midshipmen. :wink:
 
LITS, that is until they want an answer...which usually begins with "ask the moms..." Mine used to call and say "I know you know...so can you just tell me...so I don't have to waste time looking for the info." It's kind of funny. Mostly we help each other w/ big events, transportation, what to wear, and what to pack in boodle. If not for the moms, far fewer cadets would know the joys of Oreo balls...that recipe went viral through the moms page!
 
mom3boys, I have read many of your posts over the year(s) and you are always helpful. so thank you.

My son will be in at USNA class of 2017-if you find out about a page similar to yours but for USNA can you share it?

Also as a service project a group that one of my children were in were looking to find places to send cookies etc to deployed troops. It was harder than you would think. Can you keep in mind to post next year--or even with Easter on the horizon, a contact for that?

LITS, some of it is helicoptering-for sure. :rolleyes: Other than my brother who was in the coast guard for quite some time, and a grandfather who was in the army long enough to caddy for two years I had no basic information about the service. So when my son at 16 expressed an interest in serving I started learning the difference between the different branches. Not to helicopter him (terrible sentence structure) but to be able to understand the vernacular he was using. This forum has been very helpful in explaining basic information to a person with a low baseline of data.--oh and I love cookie recipes.:thumb:
 
Vista, in our baking group, West Point Moms Bake, we just ask around for names...at church, work, community...etc...we get names, then we send 10+ boxes to each name so they can share w/ their unit. Often boxes get misdirected, so the customs form says "deliver to any US soldier or chaplain." We write on the outside of the box: Do not return...eat the cookies!!! :biggrin:

I'm not against parents talking. My parents (and my classmates' parents) were on a listserv as we went through CGA. It was important to them mostly 4/c year. They made some friends.

Independent of that, the Parents Association was scary good at getting info. Their rumor mill was a few days ahead of ours.
 
Facebook is just replacing the list serve as an info source. USMA has an official fb page for parents, a new page for 2017 parents, and pages for all the teams, depts, etc. Our little moms group is unofficial...and you're right: we have the info a good few days before the cadets!

Before my enlisted son went to USAFA Prep I hung out on the Wingmoms FB page regarding BMT. Everything I needed to know about making a successful pilgrimage to Lackland AFB in TX for Basic Grad was at my fingertips, down to hotel and restaurant reviews, and tips on what NOT to wear. (they suggested buying the super extra hold hairspray). It was an awesome help. Forums were set up by flight. Since it was just an 8 wk experience it was intense but thorough and inspiring!
