My son is a 100 in AFROTC DET 157. He is not currently on scholarship. In January he was requested to have an eye exam and DODMERB exam completed by (I believe) the 1st week in February...Which he completed last week. He has not received a scholarship offer at this time, but is hopeful for an in college scholarship. He is a tech major GPA 3.77 PFA 96.9/99.7 (as of 2-8-13) Should he be expecting a scholarship offer contingent on passing the DODMERB? or is it simply mandatory for the scholarship packet that HQ reviews for ICS selection?

In my son's NROTC unit all college programmers got a DoDMERB physical during their freshman year. I don't think it had anything to do with scholarships, although it may have. Certainly kids who didn't apply for a scholarship got one.

The reason I thought it might be in regards to scholarship contention is because I had read in posts on this forum that the AF, in an effort to keep costs down, does not give all cadets the DODMERB, only those receiving scholarships or cadets going to FT. My son is a year and a half away from FT. I was hopeful.

Could very well be.

Any idea of when notification is given to the in college scholarship recipients for AFROTC?

Interesting, I just looked on AFROTC.com under scholarships this the 1st time they have nothing for ICSP. It only has HSSP and enlisted. Before anyone freaks, I only went to the scholarship page, I did not look into the bowels of the site. It may be that the submission date has passed for this yr and took it down from their website. IOTW, don't read into it too much

~~~ Flipside of the pancake is: I also will say, ICSP is not guaranteed to occur every yr. 2-3 yrs ago there was no board, along with the cancellation of the July OCS board.
You can see it goes both ways, and none of us are part of the AFROTCHQ system. This is just my way of saying look at everything.
Ask your DS when the board is, his det would know because there is a system they follow regarding the process. One part is called suspense date. This basically means by X date all of the paperwork must be submitted to AFROTCHQ. It takes a few weeks for the dets to get the paperwork in order to meet that suspense date. The suspense date is usually 4-6 weeks prior to the release of the board results. Thus, when you start tallying everything together, it can be months from start to finish. The cadre knows the dates regarding the timeline going in.
Your DS may also be up for a det only scholarship, and not the ICSP AFROTCHQ scholarship. It is possible that this is the case. In the current economy for the AF and AFROTC, the det. may want the exam to make sure that their money is being well spent. To offer an on campus scholarship for 3 yrs., without knowing from a medical perspective if they can commission is not spending their money wisely.
Our friend's DD had her exam done @ this time too, a few yrs back, only to find out that they DQ'd her for asthma, and she never knew she had it. Diagnosed at 6, never used an inhaler in her life. She is a 3rd degree black belt, competes nationally and internationally. The waiver was not given, and she dis-enrolled before she started C200.
The exam is a good sign, but the best thing a poster can say here is looking at everything ask your DS if there is an ICSP board, or is this for a det scholarship.
I will leave it to others to inform how a campus based scholarship works. I don't know if they get stipends or book allowances.
I will say only that either HQ or det. scholarship it is still a great sign. SFT is currently 50% CoC rec. Both ways, he is surely to get a strong rec next fall if he stays the course.
Don't worry about the scholarship, what will be, will be.
Thank you Pima, I have been a fan of your dedication to this forum for awhile..My DS constantly teases me with "Pima says this and Pima says that" because I start out many of our conversations in that manner. He is too busy to access this forum himself...and most everything that I know about ROTC I have learned from this forum and mostly you.
I just learned that the exam was definitely scholarship related, as it had to be completed by a certain date to be eligible for some scholarship and that my DS just received an email back from dodmerb, but has not yet had a chance to check their website for update. As he will be tied up in baseball practice for the next three hours I am going to have to be patient and wait to get the answers to all the questions I have for him.
Thank you again for your time and input.
Please don't.
I am nothing.
Follow his lead. I am the past, he is the future.
Thank you for the compliment, but at the end of the day, your DS is in a different det., different yr group, probably a different major.
You raised an amazing child...trust him. Let him guide you. He will be ADAF soon enough.
Ride the ride with him.
Good luck and God speed
Thank you for reminding me.
He is amazing as are all of the cadets and would be cadets reading this forum.
BTW I don't think I mentioned that my DS's dream job is CSAR....so if it goes his way it will definitely be an "E" ticket ride!
You have plenty of company. When I was going through the process with my children it got to the point that my family would ask me at dinner what Pima said today.:redface: She has helped many people on this board over the years and I'm certain that there are quite a few of us that are very grateful.
Good luck to your son!
Those that say you can't believe everything you read on the internet obviously aren't reading Pima's posts!!! LOL
Well you can make them laugh hard today at what you learned from PIMA.
AF fliers have callsigns given to them by others and it is tied to something unique about you. Bullet (my DH) named me during a fight. He said I the biggest Pain in My A.. , I am going to call you PIMA.
We both cracked up in laughter and the fight ended. I have been PIMA to him and my friends for 15 yrs.
Back on topic. Since he has had his exam, take a minute to make sure his shot records will be up to date for next summer. If he is selected he will have to have a short physical like a sports physical. Getting his shots done at home over the summer or next winter will mean he won't get his arm shot up while at school, and trying to get the other things required for SFT.
Are there different requirements for AFROTC and SFT than for his school?
There were certain shots that were required for ERAU. We supplied his inoculation history to the school and they verified that he was up to date on everything as of August 2012.
What a coincidence on the name. Between loved ones I am frequently referred to as PITA. I am sure you can figure out what that means!
There could be a difference. For example, does ERAU require H1N1 shots? Menococcal (sp?)? Do they review the shot records every yr, or just as freshman?
DS did not need H1N1 for college, but did need Menoccocal, he was required to have both for SFT. He also had to get a Tetanus booster too.
With our kids we had to submit their records as an incoming freshman, but never after that. Hence, why DS's tetanus shot was not current.
Just saying, look at his records now, and get them current if need be during summer, Thanksgiving or winter break, so he won't have an aching arm come March.
Thanks for that info. Baseball coach would probably be furious if my DS had sore arm due to not taking care of required inoculations in the off season.
Fortunately my niece is a doctor, has all of my DS's shot records on her computer AND lives an hour from ERAU.
Do you know if a single inoculation of Menactra is good enough or if SFT requires a booster shot ? ERAU only required a single inoculation. My niece is actually in favor of giving a booster, but they are rather expensive and my DS (officially an adult) chose to forgo the booster.
He is not due for a tetanus booster until 2016.
