Appointment Process

My DD received a letter yesterday confirming she is qualified and that those applicants will be added to the National Waiting List (NWL). She has a competitive nomination from our MOC.

We realize this year USMA admissions is handling the process differently than in the past. So is it correct that qualified applicants with the exception of the select few who have received LOA’s will be listed on the NWL?

Are all of the candidates on the NWL “racked and stacked” prior to the issuing appointments ?

Realizing there are no set quotas, how does the selection of women and diversity candidates work in this model?

Any help you can provide to educate us on how this portion of the process works is greatly appreciated.

You are mostly correct. The district and senatorial winners and LOA recipients will not be placed on the NWL. Rather, they will be the first to receive their BFEs.The rest of the 1500+ candidates will be "racked and stacked" on the NWL with the majority at the end essentially guaranteed to receive the QNS letter, the people in the middle receiving either a QNS or AoG scholarship (65, I believe) , and the top 150 and some others (~50 tops) will be receiving the BFE.
Noone will know there position on the NWL and our best option is to pray, wait, and work on plans B or C

Only the district and senatorial winners? What about the presidential, rotc, and other slots the academy can pull candidates in through?

yes, that is what I was implying by saying the LOA recipients (people under special circumstances who WP really wants) are either the presidential appointees or ROTC or recruited athletes or prior enlisted. They will be in the first wave as well, depending on how competitive they are.

What is the process that WP is using this year to notify canidates of appointments? Are the MOCs given a chance to call first, are the BFE's just put in the mail? Curious as DD has nom from MOC whose district was merged into other districts and she is not in office any longer. Are appointments coming out all at once or in waves? Moderators do you have insight? Thanks so much.

Math

Should probably leave this analysis to an academy person but here is my take.

1200 appointments offered as follows

535 MOC appointees
100 presidential appointees
200 recruited athletes with LOAs
150 of NWL based strictly on whole candidate score ( required by rules)
50 enlisted and ROTC
165 off NWL at discretion of academy to meet needs of the academy, could be gender, ethnic, geographic or other factors.

Somewhere in here I hope they fit the 250 LOE holders.
Can any of the academy experts assess this analysis for accuracy? Thanks.

I feel that most, not all, LOE holders will be top in their districts if not top on the national waiting list- or whatever category/slot they are competing to get in through. It would make sense, but I could be wrong.

Hopefully true, pthaler.

However some MOCs who know they have a candidate or two with Loas or Loes will actually give a principal nomination to another candidate because they know the other two will likely get in anyway and this way they get to more of their nominees into the academy and make constituents happy.

Does the LOE actually say "LOE" or "letter of encouragement" on it? I received a letter a few weeks ago and I'm confused as to whether or not it was an LOE. I initially thought it was in fact an LOE, but I am now second guessing whether or not that's what it is. Is the LOE the letter that authorizes an overnight stay because of competitiveness? If so, then that is what I have.

I think that's called an invitation to an overnight stay aka CVW.

An LOE states "Since is letter is sent only to outstanding candidates deserving of admission, your accomplishments to date should be a source of special pride to you and your family."

The letter is from the director of admissions, and it does have the three points that BigNick stated about LOE's on a previous post. My letter says that it "is sent only to outstanding candidates deserving of admissions." If anyone can help me with how I can know for sure it is an LOE (maybe someone else who received one) I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks so much! This is quite the relief! Now does anyone have an idea of how meaningful an LOE really is?

LOE

Yes the letter states "Letter of Encouragement" and offers an over night stay. I had posted what it is written but can't find the posting. Its on here.

Math

Goaltoservre, nice try on the math. There are a lot of variables that we are not privy to. Some MOC are anti-military and do not play that game, others may have all their slots filled and no one from their district wins an appointment, other MOCs my have multiple openings because they may have had someone drop. And still other MOCs may not have any applicants. My guess, and this is my opinion, there will be more than 1120 and less than 1200 who will be in the Class of 2017.

I can be very sure the competition will increase.

WIT84, I have a link to WP break down of Class of 2016 that will answer your questions. It show "Class Composition" and how WCS is tallied. There are no quotas when making up SA classes or reflection of demographics. If that were the case, classes would be 51% women. However, they do try to reflect leadership in the Army. West Point is designed to develop First Line Officers. So they seek candidates that are well rounded and want to have a career in the Army.

Does anyone know how they will notify canidates of their appointments on or around Febrary 26th? Thanks

There will likely be a green light on your portal for "appointment offered," and there will be a big, fat envelope (BFE) on your doorstep! Good luck!

Notifications

There are a number of ways you could be notified,
* Email you
* Send you BFE
* Offer of appointment on portal
* Sometimes MOC will receive notification and phone call you

Good luck
