So the gods of the internets blocked facebook today. What are we going to do with our lives? How are we going to set up study sessions. Communicate with classmates. This is the worst thing the school could ever do. They might as well take away our liberty now too. We dont need to know whats happening in the outside world.

Well...

Galgatron out.

The uprise of MySpace will start again!!!!!!

Lord knows how we were able to communicate, set up study sessions, etc. before Facebook. . .

We dont need to know whats happening in the outside world.

It's facebook... We already know our friends at regular schools are having a better time than us, are drunk on wed. nights, and have hot friends. A news site will be good for you. Go educate yourself.

And yet somehow, many have made it through KP without FB, smart phones, lap tops, the constant barrage of "news" that assaults the rest of us. . .

I mean, do you really need to know what the Kardashians are doing?

Well that’s just a blatant generalization of an entire generation... Kim Kardashian? No, but how about Kim Jung Un and his buddies in North Korea and China. When a majority of this school's student body has been to these or neighboring countries, I do think it's important to know what’s going on in the news.

As for the berating news at the Academy now because of technology, I may be mistaken, but seniors used to have newspapers delivered to their room every morning. How is that any different from logging on to usatoday?

Oh, my, well. Yeah, I had the Times delivered every morning 1st class year. Oh, and we had the TV in the ward room, too. They don't do that any more?

Somehow, as an underclassmen that visited a country or two, I still managed without knowing the day to day goings on around the world on an instantaneous basis (I am kind of at a loss as to the logic of that statement, but maybe it's just me). My snide remark about the press just is a statement about how what goes on in mindless Hollywood seems to get more press that the goings on in wacked out North Korea.

That aside, what are you going to do when, after graduation, you get on a vessel that DOESN'T have instant 24 hour news? Believe me, one CAN live without it. It's not like you can do anything to change it. I remember getting daily headlines posted by the radio operator as being my source of news for weeks on end.

Our society is just too connected these days. We CAN live without it. There are times when I am out of touch on assignments and the vessels that I am onboard do not have any or poor connectivity. I kind of like it, myself.

Facebook woes

This thread makes me laugh.

1. I am betting the OP thought posters would feel their pain.
2. The witty posts just make me chuckle.

cmakin,

BTW here's a Kardashian link if you want.:shake:

If Kim Kardashian would fall off the edge of the earth (or at least go to those spots on the chart that read "Here there be Dragons") by eliminating Facebook then that alone would justify the administration's position.

Sadly, our DS's and DD's are far better at dodging around the rules than we are at making them so I'm pretty sure this is so much noise without any real results. I would never try to out geek a 20 something no matter how good I think I am at this sort of stuff.

Had to smile at the OP's comment.

I know it is hard to imagine that many of us here actually attended a SA before we had: computers of any kind, cellphones, smart phones, I-Pads, I-Pods, CD players, the Internet, voice mail, email, e-books . . .

When we wanted to talk to our friends nearby, we walked to their rooms. When we wanted to talk to family or friends outside of school, we went to the phone room (a bank of pay phones) and called them. If it wasn't urgent (b/c long distance calls were very $$), we wrote them letters -- yes, actual letters.

If we wanted to know what was going on in the world, we watched TV (if a 2/C or 1/C), listened to the radio (3/c) or waited for the next day's paper (4/C). If we wanted to know what the (then equivalent of the) Kardashians were doing, we waited to get the weekly People magazine.

I know that, to today's generation a life w/o Facebook seems like a life without . . . electricity. Trust us "old folks" -- it's not. Somehow, we survived and you will too. Just like those before us survived without . . . electricity.

Just also want to point out that FB was blocked and unblocked about four different times when I was there. Usually, it was blocked because someone posted something stupid that made the school look bad.

This is nothing new - life went on.

For the best and most proper response, these types of complaints are best directed to the Chaplain ... and by Chaplain I mean C.Captain.

KP engineer,
Oh boy, you are mean, mean, mean! :yllol:
There has been a time or two recently that I wondered if you and he who wields the pointy stick were not one and the same.

I can guarantee that they are not one and the same. . .

To all the technology/social network haters in this thread, here is an interesting quote you probably agree with.

“[It] destroys memory [and] weakens the mind, relieving it of…work that makes it strong. [It] is an inhuman thing.”

The funny thing is that this was said by Socrates and refers to the new technology of his time, written word

And the ban is already lifted. LOL.
Many of them use FB as organizational and calendar tool while on campus. The school clubs even use it. The old, "when I was your age I walked uphill to school...both ways" does not apply here IMHO. Yes, the page that caused this was not wise, and the many should not always be punished for the few.

When they are at sea, it is much less important for them to know what goes on at campus, or a their home town, so it's not fair to say , "what will the do at sea?". Presumably they will be pretty busy.
