Good Luck!

Update on Class of 2017

• Target size for the class of 2017 is 1200 new cadets.

• We are eliminating rolling admissions. The majority of the class will receive their offers of admission on or about 26 February. Each offered candidate will have 45 days to accept or decline their offer.

• USMAPS cadet candidates will not receive their offers until after 1 May upon receipt of their April SAT scores and 3rd quarter grades. Bottom 10% of USMAPS class will be reviewed for an offer of admission no earlier than 10 May to ensure 4th quarter grades are included in the admissions file.

• The Letter of Assurance (LOA) was developed as a tool to encourage candidates to complete their files early. Most cohorts are completing their files early – and the LOA has no longer been an effective tool for managing the class. Due to the competitiveness of recent classes and the high acceptance rates, we are sending LOAs to only a small cohort of candidates – those in the areas where we struggle to achieve our Class Composition Goals.

• We will institute a Letter of Encouragement for highly competitive candidates so they can schedule an overnight visit if they wish to do so. The Letter of Encouragement (LOE) is not a conditional offer of admission, but conveys our interest to the candidates.

You must be 3Q’d, and a nomination from one of the many sources.

You must be strong in Academics, Leadership, and Athletics

Again, good luck, I know its difficult to try and compare yourself to others, but resist doing so, its not fair for you. Remember its not the best but the most well rounded and class composition.

Whole Candidate Score WCS

This is how WP adds up a WCS. "Whole Candidate Score" This is part of the formula they use to grade a candidate who has opened a file.

Academics (60%)
Class rank (15 points)
SAT score (35)
High School Grades (10)
Extra points for Valedictorian/National Honor Society/National Merit Scholar

Leadership (30%)
School Leadership – extra points for class or student body president
Eagle Scout/Gold Star Girls Scout
Boys and Girls State
Athletic Participation – Team Captain Status
Team sports

Fitness CFA (10%)

Being a recruited athlete /Under Represented Minority/Active Service can fall in to different category pertaining to WP Class compositions.

The standardized testing is a huge part of WCS and it is important to do your very very best and take the tests multiply times. My DS has taken ACT/SAT 8 times.

This is how WP breaks it down.

WP thinks your high school rank is more important than your GPA. However, to have a high rank (top 15%) you need a great GPA.

Also to improve your WCS, get those SAT/ACT scores as high as you can.

Again, resist comparing yourself to others. What is more important is ask yourself, "Have I Done My Very Best, How Can I Improve?"

Does anyone know if you get any athletic points whatsoever for doing a non-varsity sport? For instace, I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do but it's not through my school and I did a few years of JV sports. Also, my athletic trainer who was a USMC officer wrote me a letter of rec about my dedication to improving physically for West Point. Would any of those do you think have an effect, or does the score for that sub-category remain 0 until I earn a varsity letter/team captain.

Edit: By athletic, I mean a personal trainer who coordinated my workouts to prep for the CFA, not an athletic trainer as in a school athletic trainer.

Odd. As of 15 Feb. the SE Region RC still claimed to have over 300 files to qualify.

This is what we do know....

College grades.

I can only speak of my DS experience thus far and I hope this helps other who do re-apply for Class of 2018.

DS received a 3Q'd letter and in June received a QNS, or TWE. He later went to a prep school. On his file he had to do everything over again. He had to get his high school to send in his CAR. The prep school took care of the required SOEs and submitted his 7th semester grades and transcripts. In my opinion, WP examined the classes at his prep school and with a formula of some kind evaluated the class that closely simulated classes for a Plebe. And again, his grades did matter, fortunately he was one of the few students who received all A's. At his prep school 60 % of the students were Falcons from AFA and this week they all received offers for the Class of 2017. And finally received a MOC nom. Just as much work as the first time. The only thing he did not resubmit were his statements.

I hope that clears things up.

Thanks for the information as always tugboat. Is there an extra addition to the WCS for college grades? What's the percentage?

That number is for direct admits and has nothing to do with the USMAPS class.

Of the ~ 1200 that are admitted, ~ 200 will come out of USMAPS.

My bad - I misunderstood the question.
I thought the OP meant how many were going in to USMAPS 2014 not how many were coming out of USMAPS 2013 into USMA 2017.

Thanks for the correction, GoArmyBeatNavy.
Apologies for the confusion.

Its a big "?" for me too. I hope buff81 can give us some input on the college grades. I know you're in the same situation.

300 files

Given that the SE RC covers seven states with 85 congressional districts and 14 senators that means there are at least 1,000 files that he needs to qualify. If he has 300 left that means he is at least 70% complete, which is very impressive and that decisions may have already been made for 70 of the 100 slates the RC is responsible for. I know it's rough math, but that means there is a good chance for SE candidates to hear early in the process.

If you do well in college in a hard curriculum, you could be considered for a "bonus" on your whole candidate score. There are criteria, but I do not think it has been released. I remember that it was important to be in a program that had similar classes as a West Point Plebe would take.

No problem. At first I had thought that something had changed:smile:

Tug Boat,
As I await the hopeful delivery of the BFE for my DS, I read many of your posts and wonder how you are so informed about the ways of West Point, and if you have a hopeful DS or DD you are also waiting on?
Just Curious!
