I seem to remember my son reporting all int'l travel on his contracting papers. He is volunteering with an NGO in Geneva this summer. Does he need to request permission . . . Or report . . . Or do nothing? He can certainly ask someone, but I don't want to send him on a rabbit trail if it's nothing.

I suppose I can't speak to AROTC, but for NROTC I know my son would need to inform them and, especially for foreign travel, perhaps request permission. For example I seem to recall him mentioning that he can't travel to Mexico. He always needs to let his unit know where he is heading, foreign or domestic.

Ditto with DS who is AROTC. It's no biggie. They just need to report it ahead of time. Restrictions are few. Has travelled several times: Ukraine, Poland, Brazil.

Claims the cadre okayed Iran, but not DPRK. DS always plans for maximum manoeuvrability.

Traveling to Switzerland is no big deal. Its a good idea to mention it to his cadre. They do need to know where he'll be (in general) over the Summer.

One thing he should get in the habit of is keeping good records. When it comes time to fill out his security clearance paperwork he'll need to detail all his foreign travel...dates, locations, addresses, foreign contacts, etc. Advise him to be proactive and keep good records now. It'll save him a lot of trouble in the future, especially if he ends up needing a TS/SCI clearance for his job.
