My question is if my DS receives an appointment, still waiting, and he has received scholarships that go straight to the school of his choice, can he use these at the academy to pay for uniforms, computer and all the freshman purchases. Thanks in advance.

Depends on the restrictions of the scholarship. Some can only be used for tuition or may have other restrictions.

The scholarship money will be accepted by USAFA, but it will not go directly toward paying for things Doolie year. It will be applied to the cadet loan balance (which all cadets have). This money will not directly benefit them until toward the end of their sophomore year when their loan will be paid off early. Depending on the size of the scholarship this may mean a month or two early, or a year early.

Our son had a scholarship from my employer which paid $1000 per year so he got his loan paid off about 6 months early with the first two payments, and began getting a lot bigger stipend checks during that time because his loan was done. During his Junior and Firstie years the amount was returned to him as 'excess pay' on one check during the year.

thanks

Thanks for clearing that up. It makes it worth it filling them out for second choice, knowing he can use them for his first, which is AFA.

I know a few of my scholarships do not allow you to use the money at any academy

How much is the loan balance as a doolie?

I believe that my son's was about $6500. This pays for their computer, uniforms issued, and any other issued items during the Doolie year. It is paid back on a 24-month payment plan and is deducted automatically from their cadet pay.

Yes. The scholarship rules have to allow the money to be used at one of the Academies. My son had several other scholarships that were restricted to being used for tuition or room and board only so he had to decline those. The only one he could use was the one from my employer.

thank you

Thanks for the advice folks. Always questions, so glad I found these forums.

So, let me get this straight (because I heard someone say they went into debt while at the academy)... Going to school there will be paid for out of the money they give you for being a cadet? How much money is left over after this amount is taken out?

I have no idea how you would go into debt at the Academy.... The things you need that are issued to you during basic training (uniforms, computer, boots etc) come out of a "loan" that comes out of your cadet pay. What this really means is you just get very little of the full cadet pay (which was about 850 when I was there) at first until your loan is paid off (usually by the end of sophomore year). A few other things like haircuts and laundry come out of you pay as well, but the major items like traditional tuition and room and board are covered and you never deal with that at all.
