Our son will be going to USNA this summer, and his birthday list has some things on it that we're not sure he'll be able to use, especially during Plebe year. Will he be able to use personal fitness equipment or wear non issued fitness clothing at all during Plebe year?

Thanks very much,

My son took his own running shoes, and some people have mentioned getting their Mids additional compression shorts. My DS however said he was fine with what was issued. :)

Unless things have changed, mids of all classes can only wear Navy-related PT gear.

I would skip trying to find a tangible gift for PS other than cash. Once he's settled, I'm sure he can suggest lots of ideas.

Compression shorts and broken in running shoes with "body glide" is good.

You might consider delaying the birthday gift until PPW when your mid will have a better idea what is needed/desirable/permitted. I have noted in the past that many mids look for printers during PPW, and others have mentioned getting new cell phones. One outside source for military gear is <www.uscav.com>. I have had good results finding things I wanted and no hassle on shipping, returns, etc.

Watches and Sunglasses are very popular items among my sons friends . My plebe asked for a running watch and a nice watch to wear while in uniform. He also asked for a few pairs of Sunglasses as gifts. They issue plebe's printers during Plebe Summer so no need for that.

Wow we had to buy a printer for the MID and it was a great run on the Mid Store:rolleyes:

$$. It is amazing how quickly you can burn your monthly pay of 100 dollars a month during liberty.

Computer accessories are nice - laser mouse, webcam, speakers (depending on company).
A TV (to use as a monitor) would also work but nothing bigger than 48".

Mids usually have two watches: A nice metal one to wear w/ dress uniform and a knock-around watch for classes and workouts.

You couldn't go wrong with a new phone or a camera. Cell reception in Bancroft is really spotty, especially on the lower decks, so a signal booster would also be nice. If Sprint is your carrier, you can pretty much assume that you won't have much contact with your plebe :p

Other ideas...
-Ipad (It's small and portable. You can store it easily and do lots of unplebish things with it)
-Protein. Who likes king hall, anyway?
-Air fresheners
-Snack food

If all else fails, give your plebe-to-be Amazon gift cards. You can buy pretty much anything on Amazon.

I would hold off on sunglasses. Military personnel get huge discounts through Oakleys.

Of course, this is all for after plebe summer. Everything I listed is completely within the rules. Hope it helps.
