Transferring a 3 year AD AROTC Scholarship to a 4 year?

I have read many times of scholarship winners trying to transfer a 4 year state scholarship to a 3 year private school. Has anyone been able to transfer a 3 year private to another school where the cost would actually be less expensive for 4 years than 3 years at the original school?

I would guess, if you went back over the threads you reviewed once again, you would find they were in reference to an AFROTC scholarship. AFROTC has different types of scholarships that allow this. A 4 year in-state AFROTC scholarship can be converted to a 3 year out of state with some further restrictions on the scholarship. I've never heard of this with an AROTC scholarship. The logic behind the 3 year offers for AROTC was that they were losing scholarship winners during or immediately after freshman year and therefore lost the funds used to pay for freshman year. It seems to me your proposal flies against this, but perhaps you should try. The worse that can happen is they say no. I don't know who you would contact to broach this topic though.

A lot will depend on whether the state school has any 4yr scholarship slots available. The best thing to do is contact the ROO at the State School and see what they have to say regarding a transfer. Are the schools in the same Brigade?

Our DD was offered a choice between 4 Yr. In-State, and 3 yr. Private, in March, 2011. I think it is definitely a budget issue. Given this, it might be possible to trade a 3 yr. Private for a 4 yr. In-State. It doesn't hurt to ask, so ask away.

It is definitely worth asking. My DSS is in the process of accepting his 3-year AD in AROTC and requesting a transfer to another school. We have been in contact with the ROO from his desired school, who says he believes the transfer will be granted, and it's possible it may be converted to a 4-year since the new school is less expensive. The key is to get in communication with at least the desired school, or both, in order to help facilitate things. Best of luck.
