USMA Class of 2017 Acceptance Thread

DS received his BFE Sat! Everyone is on Cloud 21 and so excited to be a part of the Class of 2017. Thank you NWP for helping to make dreams come true.

Can you and others share some information on NWP? We looked at that a while ago and DS is accepted at NWP, but he is still holding out hope for a BFE. As time goes on, we may have to look closer at NWP. What are the advantages of NWP over a 4 year college?
 
NWP is a good program - but not officially recognized by USMA as one of its Civil Prep programs. Difficulty for some CA candidates is getting into a college in the spring semester - if you may be in that boat, recommend your DS take a course this summer somewhere as well.

The other option is just to go to a regular university, take a challenging academic schedule, add in ROTC, and it never hurts to take the SAT/ACT again this spring.
 
NWP

It is not a military school. It is a prep school that is one semester. They accept less than 95 kids a year. The free agents and sponsored students need their study skills and sat/act scores brought up. 100% of Falcons are picked up and and most free agents.

Options while waiting

Does admissions look solely at the GPA attained and courses taken for someone applying as a college freshman? Do they factor in the rigor of the college attended? I am thinking it may be easier to take the classes and get higher grades at a State U rather than someplace like VA Tech.

MY DS went into 2012 NWP as a Free agent (feeder for AFA Falcons 63 of the 92 kids). It is only a Fall Semester (very intense) with Spring semester either local or state (he is at our local JrC). He claims NWP was the BEST thing to happen for him as it validated his commitment to getting into a SA. He improved his SAT/ACT scores and was happy to receive noms from CA Senator Boxer USMA and CA Congressman to USMA and AFA. He was notified with the 1st wave from WPA that he was on the NWL and when he spoke to them (last week) they stated that he would hear from them soon. Turns out - VERY SOON! His BFE came Sat and it was dated 2/26. Hang in there everyone - Dreams can come true! He is on Cloud 21!!!!!!

The Durbecks are well informed with all SA and good people. None of the credits are transferable and you the second semester you take similar class at a local JC or college of your choice. This year they had three sponsored and two free agents. All got offers, last year it was similar. I think it is an excellent plan B

Reapplying and class rank

How much does HS class rank still carry over for a candidate applying out of college? My DS was good in all aspects but rank and GPA in HS: great SATs, leadership, etc. Classic late bloomer who did not work up to his gifted aptitude in his early HS years. Had he done in 9/10 what he has done the last 2 years, he probably would have been golden.

Your DS will have reapply and get a MOC nom. He can use High School for CAR but will need to establish a relationship with college prof for SOE. Here is the trick college is more difficult and can be more demanding than HS. Taking courses similar to Plebe year will be important. If his grades fall below a B forget it. He will need to submit 1st college semester grades and improved sat/act scores. They want to see if DS can handle college level. Chem is the Plebe killer

What are CAR and SOE? Regarding SATs he got an 800 Cr and 690 Math...does he need to retake?

CAR is the candidate activity report. SOE are the school official evaluation. He will need to send in at least two more SOEs from college professors/instructors. Preferably in Math, English or Lab Science.

If he does not get in this year he should plan to retake to raise the Math score. A 690 is a great score, but he is trying to offset a lower high school rank. Academics count for 60 percent of the evaluation. Another way to look at it is SATs/ACTs count for 30% of the whole candidate evaluation and high school class rank counts 30% of the whole candidate evaluation. They are on par with leadership activities which count thirty percent of the evaluation as well. It is important to raise the SATs/ACTs (he should take both) to offset the class rank.

In college, he should take a curriculum that looks like West Point's plebe year. I have seen recommended on these forums that candidates in college take Calculus, Lab Science and English. Plebes at West Point take Calculus, Chemistry, (some take Physics), English, History, Computer Science. Basically a bachelor of science core.

He should aim to score all As in his college courses. West Point has given college candidates bonuses in the past for outstanding college work. It is important that he take a full load. This bonus might also offset the lower class rank.

Humble advice from a member of the Class of 2016

Congrats on getting in! Beast barracks can be an intimidating challenge, but it is entirely mental. Stay positive and bring that positive attitude with you and you'll end up having a blast!

Some advice before CBT starts:

1) Don't get in trouble.
2) Keep running, do pullups and ankles-to-the-bars
3) There's no reason to buy everything on the "Packing List." Trust me on this. Bring black shoes/ tan combat boots, comfortable underwear, special toiletries, a headlamp with a red lens (surprisingly, this was extremely useful during land nav and moving around at night in our patrol bases!), and a back scrubber with a long handle (for prickly heat). There's not much more you should need.
4) Enjoy as much of your time home as you can possibly have!

I was also in SROTC (as a cadet recruiter), so if you have questions about that, feel free to ask.
