Need some honest input on ROTC

I hear the Senior Military Colleges are much more competitive for AROTC scholarships. Should I waste my time by listing them on my application, or do I have the right credentials?

My cumulative GPA is 3.85, and I'm in the top 20% of my class. I take the ACT April 13th and expect to do well on it. I've taken Honors classes and am enrolled in 2 AP classes next year.

I letter varsity on our Tennis team. I'm also a member of our school's Muay Thai club and participate in local trail runs. I was recently elected Secretary of our National Honor Society chapter. I also do a lot of community service for my church youth group, and have over 85 internship hours at my local fire department. I also plan on getting a summer job.

I'm considering listing VMI, North Georgia, Norwich, or VA Tech on my application. Which do I have the best shot at? Don't be afraid to be honest with me, I can handle the truth!

Take the ACT and SAT as much as you can. They'll take the highest score you get.

Just keep being involved in your school and community, and keep your grades up. There's no way of telling if you'll receive something or not. But the best thing to do now is to continue what you are doing.

Here are the stats for SMC's:

Others on this forum can clue you in about xROTC stats.

Search this forum for ACT/SAT prep. It is too late to do the serious prep, but there is a number of "tricks" to standardized test taking.

Best of luck!

You will never know unless you try. Try for them all. Increase your options. Believe in yourself. Getting accepted or getting the scholarship is only the beginning. You will be continually tested as you progress through college. The question is will you work hard to prepare your self to become an officer? Will you work hard on your grades and your physical skills? Will you help others in college and ROTC? Will you help your cadre and school to be a dependable person that they can rely on? Will you make the most of your opportunites?

Will you try?

Good luck

I think I definitely should. What kind of stats did you son/daughter have to attend Norwich. Did he go with an ROTC scholarship, or did you have to pay some other way?

I agree with Norwich Dad. Unless you apply you have no chance of getting a scholarship. Do YOUR best in getting the best stats YOU can...scholar, athlete, leader. My DS is at Norwich on a 4 year AROTC scholarship. Feel free to PM if you want.

Have you done a tour of any of the above? I think it is very important for any applicant to any SMC to observe the lifestyle in action. It is one thing to read about it. It is entirely different to experience it. I know you can sign up for an overnight at Norwich.

You sound like you have doubts about being qualified. Nothing better than to find out what type of student is actually there than to be with them.

DS's HS numbers were much lower than yours. His GPA, OML were very high at Norwich.

Talk to the admissions office and the ROTC office at all the schools you mentioned. Give yourself plenty of options. Have them send you info. Establish a connection. Remember you are marketing yourself. No one else will do that for you. You would be surprised at how far it goes.

There are scholarships/grants besides ROTC. Set up the college process where you will have at least five school choices.

Talk to them now, Dont wait for summer, no one is around. School will be out in 6 to 8 weeks.

Good luck

Excellent advice.
