This must have been covered before but not having much luck finding most current thread.
Are C4Cs supposed to just file 1040EZ and their home state?
Are parents no longer able to claim C4Cs as dependents even if they were still at their household for half of the year?
Any information and advise regarding this topic would be helpful.
Thanks

1. Cadet was not in the parent's house, as their dependent, for 6 months of the year. BCT starts in June. Unless BCT started after 1 July, the cadet has been on his/her own longer than the 6 months.
2. If a parent can claim MORE than half of the expense for the year in supporting little johnny or jannie, then they can claim them. But you better be a really rich family. I mean REALLY RICH. Because, what the air force says they have provided, through little johnny/jannie's blood/sweat/tears, is a whole lot more than pretty much any parent spent on their kid. Food, clothing, housing, medical, dental, education, etc... Basically, it's not that the government is claiming Johnny/Janiee as a dependent; it's Johnny/Jannie have been EMANCIPATED. They are claiming themselves.
3. Yes, most cadets can get away with the EZ form. There is assistance for cadets, but it's really simple. They get a W2 each year. Not all their money is taxable income. And their first couple years are only going to be less than $9,000 per year. Most cadets can do their taxes in less than 20 minutes. Their W2 is a breeze.

Makes me wonder then what is the date

of R-Day in the summer of 2014? I've searched on the website, but no luck yet.

Both DS and his roommate used the TurboTax Military Edition online to file their taxes. It's free for cadets. He filed a 1040EZ for Fed tax and filed a state return for his home state. His refunds were EFTed into his USAA account. As CC stated, he will no longer be a deduction for you unless you all spent a whole lot of money on him.

Hope that helps . . .

Maybe I was mistaken to ask

about R-Day, but it appeared you said the parents could claim their child in the year they had them for 6 months. The only year for that to happen at a SA is the first year. Since R-Day to me signifies the date after which the parents are not responible for their well-being, then that date suggests to me then the parents can not claim them any further if its in June. I am not sure I got off the topic that far that so many questioned the R-Day reference given CC's list of what is relevant to the Tax question for parents, and that even the first year seems the Cadets responsibility.

Is it not true that the CGA and/or USMMA has R-Day or I-Day on or after 7/1? Does that mean then those parents do get to Claim their child one more year?

May not matter to you all, but its worth some dollars toward Visit-flights for some of us not as well off as others. Thank you.

Well, this is an air force forum, so, I mistakenly took "R-Day" as "Recognition Day". Which just happened recently in the last couple weeks. "I-Day" is when the cadets at the air force academy go to BCT. "A-Day, while we're at it is "Acceptance Day". That's after making it through BCT.

We claimed our DS as dependent his Freshman yr mainly due to his enrollment at a private school here in the islands and the high cost of living  the price we pay to live here in paradise.:yllol: Its really a matter of choice...if we get an audit, I have no problem defending my reasoning. If we don't win an audit...no big deal. But I highly doubt that the IRS will quibble over first year dependency claim for SA cadets. if they argue it wasn't "6 months" short of 1 week...my argument would be xmas break was "1 week" excetera excetera... but again... its really not about 6 months...its a ratio of how much it costs you to "raise your kid at home in relation to how much the SA provides. My CPA had no issues taking the claim and he was well aware that DS is a cadet.

My apologies CC,

I was focused more on the Tax-inquiry than on the actual Forum. Not intuned enough to the 'Days' accurate for all SA's. I was using R-Day as Reporting Day across the board, albeit incorrectly.

Tried using turbotax but cadet's pay grade of C is not an option.
There's only enlisted E1-E9 and Officer pay grades.
Is there an equivalent enlisted pay grade we can use for cadets?
Thanks

From the TurboTax site:

"If you're still a cadet, you qualify for the lower end military edition. Cadets can select pay grade of E-5. Just pick E-5 from the drop down and you will be fine.
Thanks for using our Military Edition, and please tell a friend!
(More importantly, thanks for your service.)"

I just love Google . . . .

Appreciate it.:thumb:

if your cadet goes to military one source, he/she can use h&r block, which I have found to be pretty decent the last few years.

Claiming your C4C as a dependant

Every family's situation is different. We are not rich - certainly not really rich. However, we were able to count our DS as a dependant on our returns for his C4C year, as were a number of other parents we know (none of whom I would consider rich - certainly not hurting, but not rich). Attending a private school for the first 5 months of that year did contribute to our ability to claim provision of over half of his support.

I figured out my problem (see other thread that I started as wel http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=31575 l). I'm being redundant to help others in the years to come. :)

When you link http://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/military-edition.jsp it asks for an email address to send off your personal information. If you then click on the link in the EMAIL to get started, it won't ask all of the military questions nor give you the promo discount.

The correct approach is to go back to the original link where you put in the email information and click "get started" at THAT location. It worked. Free state, free federal, free state electronic filing, etc. A total of $400 return.:thumb:
