Hey, I recently checked the status on my Army ROTC scholarship and saw that I had been granted a 4 year scholarship to one school: Cornell University. However, I was also DENIED admission to cornell university just days prior!!! Was this an administrative error? I'm really not sure what to do now... Is there any way that I could transfer the scholarship to one of the schools I was admitted to?

I really want to serve my country, and I would love to have an ROTC scholarship!

No, there wasn't an administrative error. Cadet Command does not communicate with the admissions offices to see if you were admitted (or even applied).

When you receive your official offer in the US Mail, there will be a form you can return requesting a transfer of the scholarship to a school where you have been admitted. You may or may not get a transfer of the scholarship due to balancing the scholarships between schools, brigades, etc.

Don't give up hope yet, though. Often, Cadet Command only lists one school on the website, but the paper letter (official) has more than one school. So you can now officially stand guard by your mailbox for further details.

... or as we like to call it --> STALKING THE MAILBOX

But hey, congrats on your scholarship!! Even better that you got a 4 year; I'm honestly surprised that CC still had 4 years on Board 3.

Hoping the letter reveals awardance to the school(s) of your choice!

Best of luck!

You may very well be able to transfer the scholarship, so don't be discouraged. One thing in your favor is that Cornell is a high-priced school with $43,000 tuition and fees in 2012/13 ($27,000 for NYS students at the statutory colleges), and Cadet Command would probably be happy to save money, assuming that's applicable in your case.

Get in touch with the ROOs at the schools where you were admitted. The decision to approve transfers of scholarships is not made at the school level but at least you can get a sense of whether there are openings for scholarship transferees. When you get the formal offer in the mail, accept it but indicate that you are seeking a transfer to XYZ College. Since my familiarity with the process is a few years old, you should get in touch with your contact person at Cadet Command to verify this. He or she can also identify the specialist involved with transfers.

Just for the sake of my understanding - what is the purpose to finding/contacting the transfer specialist?

Our DD letter listed 2 schools, her 1st choice and an instate school (UT - Austin). The letter will provide instruction on how to transfer the scholarship. We are in a similiar situation, waited listed at #1 and their process is to re- rack and stack kids who applied for wait list. Too much risk.

Good luck.

Just be sure, that when you do send the letter to CC - to include your acceptance letter from College XYZ.

You will find some recent posts, mostly by me concerning rejection, waitlist etc. as it relates to the calculus of admissions. Search those topics.

If Cornell, truly, is your first and only love, call and tell them that. Oh, and by the way you do have an ROTC scholarship which pays the full sticker price of tuition. Maybe 20% of Cornell students pay full freight. They may reconsider. It would definitely not be the first time. You may even see if the ROTC cadre will go to bat for you.

You have NOTHING to lose, and you could potentially get an answer in 72 hrs.

I don't remember seeing a letter of instruction on the process several years ago so the process may have improved.

There were some complications, including a transfer between brigades, and things were moving slowly. This was well into May - there was an April board then - and the Cadet Command contact suggested we speak to the specialist to make sure everything was in order.

Must have changed then - the new letters specifically address the ability to have scholarships transferred (no guarantees obviously).

Thanks everyone for the encouraging feedback!!!

I've emailed Cornell's ROTC cadre, as well as the CC human resources specialist who I was working with. Is there anything else I can do, or should I just wait to get my letter?

Also, kind of unrelated, but I was wondering when people usually get their letters?

I just received my letter and saw that cornell was the only school I got the scholarship from.

Do you have any suggestions for how I should approach writing my scholarship transfer letter?

Did you try Cornell Admissions again? Read my previous post. You have nothing to lose if your heart is at Cornell.

I sent them an email, but I have not heard anything from them yet. I'm not sure if I should keep waiting on them because the letter I got said that CC had to have my mailed transfer proposal in hand by the 12th, so I'm really not sure if they'd be able to organize something in that time...

If you have a direct contact at Cornell, I recommend you call. Nothing happens quickly in admissions at these schools.

You need to know if reconsideration is even in the cards (what is their timeline for this or even do they reconsider) for someone who comes in tuition paid. I am assuming here that you passed along your requirement of the 12th for moving your scholarship elsewhere.

I have a hard time thinking an Ivy would reconsider - they've got lots of kids who pay or can pay full tuition - Has anyone heard of a reconsideration at an Ivy based on a ROTC award?

I've left a message on the cadre's answering machine, but like another13mom said I don't have much hope that anything will come of it.

I would like to try and transfer my scholarship to UMich, UC Berkeley, or Tufts (My top three choices currently).

Does anyone know if I would have to mail a hard copy of the letter to CC or if I could simply email them a copy?

Emailing should work - I emailed mine, and they received my scholarship acceptance letter and updated it within a few hours. ... just waiting on word of transfer now.

I would recommend emailing and mailing a hard copy just to cover your bases.
