Son was accepted to NASS this summer ......and after doing some reading I'm under the assumption that even though he was accepted for NASS he is not an official candidate until he possibly receives a letter in mid-May ? Is this correct ?

In other words he is not able to continue his app or even see his app until notified?

I don't remember this being the case 4 years ago when my other son applied but I could be wrong.

Was he notified by mail of his acceptance? Last year the acceptance letter had a candidate number in the upper right side. This number was used to continue the application once it opened in the summer.

I believe you are correct. Unlike USAFA and USMA, USNA does not assign a candidate number and provide access to a portal via a password until later in the process. It's a little bit confusing how each SA structures their process differently.

DS also was accepted to NASS - session 2. No portal yet, though he has one for both USAFA and USMA.

NASS notification was via email. Now that I think about it, there was a candidate number, but no directions or password to a portal. That may come later. I'll have to go back and look at the email.

ETA: Found this from Admissions to DS in response to an email from him regarding how to update his profile for NASS selection:

"Sometime in early June (if not before) you will receive a letter with your
Candidate number, username and password to access your personal candidate
page and continue the application process."

Last year after mailing NASS paperwork and payment, DS received a letter dated April 9, 2012 stating:

"Thank you for your prompt response in returning your payment and all necessary forms....."

The Candidate Number was listed under the salutation on that letter. That was the first time we saw a candidate number on the correspondence, earlier letters re: NASS did not have a candidate number.

DS attended NASS Session 1 in June. In May 2012 DS received a letter informing him he was an official candidate for the USNA. That letter provided the initial login information for the portal: Username and Password

I'm not sure if the process will be the same this year, but DS was notified he was an official candidate even before he attended NASS. The admission process has many steps, but it is so worth the journey! DS will be part of of the Class of 2017 and heading to USNA for I-Day in June. It's hard to believe it's been one year since DS was making plans for NASS.

As pointed out, the online application will not be available for the next class until at least May. This is standard practice on how USNA runs things.

Son did receive a six digit candidate number with NASS acceptance email but as LLL stated no portal and no official candidate status.
