I was awarded a 3 year AD AROTC scholarship to VMI and the paperwork I received does not say anything about health benefits. Do AROTC cadets (both contracted and non-contracted) receive benefits like health insurance, dental insurance etc, or do you only receive those once you commission as a 2nd LT?

no health benefits. The benefits are: Tuiton+Fees (or) Room and Board, your choice; Book stipend of $1,200 per year, and monthly Subsistence Allowance of 9 or 10 months (I'm still unclear about the details of how many months) of $300/mo 1st year, $350 second, $450 3rd, and $400 4th. Plus a one time reimbursement for travel costs in reporting to your Battalion (in other words showing up to school) the first time.

Really? That's good to know.

Read the fine print on this one, and make sure your DS/DD talks with the battalion ahead of time, have a conversation with the HR, make sure the correct forms are completed.

This payment is sort of hit and miss as far as actually getting it, and there are restrictions. Not all HR's are equal, some are on top of things and some, well let's just say things can fall between the cracks. You can apply for this, just don't count on it 100%.

... wait. 450 Jr year; 400 Sr year?? Was that a typo?

I heard that the travel reimbursement is extremely hard to get approved nowadays?

Yep...typo, it's currently $500.00 per month senior year.

You've heard correctly.

Oh, one other thing, your covered by military medical whenever your at training such as Airborne, Air Assault, LDAC, CULP, CTLT, and so on.

Jcleppe is correct when training you are medically covered.

I just want to point out nobody should assume that what AROTC is giving as a stipend for MSIII's will be the stipend when you become an MSIII.

Look at AFROTC threads, they cut the stipend this yr. for even contracted cadets.

Assume means make an A$$ out of you and me.

Yes, sequestration is part of the issue, but remember the DOD for the next 10 yrs needs to reduce their budget by A LOT!

Pima,

Has anybody ever heard why the AFROTC cut the stipend amount. The AFROTC website was showing the lower stipend amounts long before the sequestration occured.

So far the AROTC has not had even a whisper or rumor regarding stipends and all the websites for those starting their applications show the same stipend amounts. Of course AROTC is still sending 1100 or so cadets on CULP Missions and none of the summer training opportunities have been recinded as of yet.

Of course we all know just how fast that can all change, everyone should heed your advice, Don't assume anything, be ready for everthing.

And further, after their reduction, AFROTC stipends now match NROTC stipends. It's my believe, as usual - based on no evidence whatsoever, that Army's, which is still higher, will not be far behind in their stipend reduction. Still, not a bad trade-off in this economy, considering you have a guaranteed job after graduation.

They will never IMPHO state why.

My guess is they have enough in the pool, that they don't have to up the ante....stipend.

There is an inverse relationship with the military and the economy. High unemployment rate, low attrition rate. That is where they are at now, especially for the AF, since they are not in the fore front like the Army regarding military conflicts.

IS(Type 7) or 18K (2) or any tuition(1) amount is a big carrot. 250 compared to 300 not so much.

JMPO.

Jcleppe,

Just as an FYI, some summer opportunities are/have been cut. They came out last week and said CTLT slots to Ft Jackson were cut due to lack of post funding support. I'm not sure if all were cut, but I know the majority were. But, yes you are correct, the majority of summer training has not been cut.
