Hoya AROTC cross-town question

DS has been accepted to both GW and AU and both schools offer his major. His ultimate career goal is to be an officer and so his primary deciding factor between the two schools is which school is more favorable from the ROTC aspect. His concerns are ease of getting to PT and labs (I know some schools do not allow cars...some make exceptions...and some commutes can be challenging), cadets ability to get classes that work with their ROTC schedule, and the over all cadet support from the universities (ie: some schools offer interest housing for cadets so they're housed with other "early risers")
Thank you for any comments, positive or negative, about the programs.

AU?

I'm assuming GW is George Washington University.

Just curious, because aren't the Hoyas form Georgetown University. Is Georgetown the host school?, meaning both GW and AU are crosstown.

This might help (taken from the FAQ sheet about ROTC under "What does ROTC entail"):

"We conduct physical training (PT) 3 times a week from 6:30 am until 7:30 am. PT is held at your home school on Monday and Wednesday while Friday with monthly APFT at GU and battalion PT sessions that rotate between the 4 participating universities. Transportation is provided to all Army ROTC events. About one weekend a month we train in the field at one of the local active military installations. We train in things like land navigation, squad and platoon level battle drills, basic rifle marksmanship, etc. "

Jcleppe...yes Georgetown is the host school for both George Washington and American University. DS met with the HOYA battalion months ago when he was planning to apply to Georgetown but has since set his sights on GW and AU.

Melitzank...thanks for the link re: PT. I notice that MS class (lab) isn't addressed...do you know if that is also held at each cross town?
DS would like to hear from cadets/parents if GW and AU have been supportive of cadets with scheduling and housing or if he would be at a disadvantage not being at a host school.

Pretty sure that the classes are held at Georgetown...in their Cadet Handbook it says all cadets must register for their Georgetown University military science classes at their home school, so it sounds like it's at Georgetown though..below that under transportation it says:

"a. Contact cadets at your home school to organize carpooling.
b. Shuttle vans may be coordinated. Contact the cadet chain of command for more information.
c. Public Transportation: Consult the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority website at: www.wmata.com.
d. The numbers for some Taxi companies that operate in DC are:
Diamond Cab: 202-387-6200
Yellow Cab: 202-544-1212"

Hope that helps.

Demon,

It sounds like the cadets are responsible to arrange the carpooling from the crosstown school, While it looks like a van can be requested it seems it is not a guarantee. It would be a good idea to research the transportation options between the school. DC has a great transportation system, it just depends on the location of the stations as to how convenient it will be to travel between schools.

Make sure you son does a lot of research with both schools, find out how hard it is to schedule classes between the two schools.

There are a lot of cadets that attend crosstown programs, some are easier then others, all will have it's issues, it's doable but not always easy. Time management will be a must depending on the travel time between schools. Being at a cross town will have even more issues if your son decides to participate in things like Ranger Challenge or Color Guard, these will most likely be at the host school, meaning more trips back and forth. Once your son begins to have leadership positions he may find that he will have to make more then one trip a day to the host school.

Cadet ranking within the Battalion is very important, he will need to make sure he leaves himself enough time to be involved in many aspects of the Battailon, meaning more trips back and forth, working out the transportation will be very important. While GPA is the most important, accounting for 40% of the cadet's OML, the battalion review is worth roughly 26%, all of this will effect his chances of Active Duty as well as Branch Choice.

Just some things to think about.

Re: transportation...the one bad thing about Georgetown is that it's not real close to the metro like some of the other colleges are, but I think shuttles are provided to and from Georgetown to the metro.

Hoya battalion

Our DS is a cadet who attends AU. His advice is to choose the school where you will be happiest. G'town is fairly accessible from both schools. If you want specific info about the unit send me a pm and I'll send you his contact info.
