Hello. We had a friend who went through the USMA application this year. He received 2 nominations, but did not get accepted into West Point. He told us that WP no longer issues a letter of assurance and that it is not on a rolling admission basis anymore, either. Can anyone answer these two questions for certain? I am applying to be in the class of 2018 and would like the most accurate, up-to-date information. Thanks.

I only see one question there - if you are referring to will there be rolling admissions or LOAs for the class of 2018, that is no where near decided. Check in August.

This year there were almost no LOAs and no Rolling Admissions. There were VERY few exceptions.
I believe this was a big mistake. I hope West Point Admissions goes back to LOAs and Rollings Admissions next year. The purpose of these procedures is to "lock-in" outstanding candidates early so they do not go to other schools. I believe we might have lost a few good candidates as a result of no rolling admissions.

I TOTALY agree with you. I would love to see some research on blue chip or highly attractive applicants that left -did they get an Letter Of Assurance to another S.A. ? My son was pretty boarder line but the United States Naval Academy Letter Of Assurance at the end of August was a pretty big enticement to an 18 yr old.

I know an athlete who received an LoA this year, but only because when West Point tried to scout him he made it clear he wanted an offer and assurance he would be appointed. He had Princeton trying to entice him, and he wanted to know USMA would give him an appointment if turned down Princeton. They weren't happy about it, but Admissions issued his LoA to him.

Also, in the event the good candidates were lured away to public or private universities for civil programs, then I doubt West Point would mourn the loss. The primary focus of West Point is to produce Army leaders, and if good candidates are not so determined to attend that they would let no rolling admissions get in the way then I doubt they were a good fit anyways.

My DS received a LOE and was placed on the NWL. Yes, we were mail box stalkers, and it was somewhat comforting that he was told that he would hear from WP within the next week - and he did. After the 1st wave went out DS received his appointment the following Saturday. Hope this helps.

My son received his USMA LOA in Aug and offer of appointment in Oct. Also had LOA from USNA and offers from Stanford, Michigan, Penn St.

I suspect the LOAs and early appointment offers will likely continue in small numbers for blue chip athletes and highly qualified URM candidates.

I'm sure that will be the case. I think LOAs may also go out to some who had an appointment with a tragedy involved before R-Day (e.g., death in family preventing reporting). I thought earlier this year that WP might decide to go back to LOAs after all the uncertainty this year, but in retrospect i think they will stick to LOEs. I wouldn't be shocked if USAFA and USNA eventually adopt them as well.

As a previously stated, there are plenty if academically, high caliber candidates who are applying and WP wants those who are committed to becoming officers, not just becoming students.
