What are you allowed to bring in basic training for plebe summer?

I know electronics are not allowed. How about watches? Can you bring a notebook?

You can bring whatever you want; it'll pretty much all be locked up until the end of Plebe Summer.

You'll be issued a notebook, several writing pads, and a few waterproof (sweat-proof) books.

You'll get a list of things to bring with your permit to report packet. Bring those things and nothing else.

Sorry to bring back this thread but i have one more question-somewhere in the forum (or maybe some other forum) someone said that parents can mail study materials for validation tests, like books and papers. Is this true? Or will these also get confiscated? If they are allowed to mail such items, can we just bring it to I-Day?

I doubt you'll have time to "study" those materials. I believe validation tests are now taken very early in PS so, if you want to study, do it before you arrive. In the end, it's a test of what you've mastered and, unlike a course in h.s., I'm not sure studying will really help.

DD's PTR package contains a letter on this topic. The relevant line reads:
"Since the validation and placement tests begin immediately after Induction Day, the only time you will have to prepare is before you come to the Naval Academy."

Does that include placement tests for higher level classes? Or are those conducted after plebe summer? (for example. differential eq, linear algebra, etc)

Plebe summer tests for math go up to Calc III. Anything else you want to validate will have to wait until the ac year and will need to be discussed with the department on an individual basis.

Same basic idea with the other classes.

You will barely have time to brush your teeth and read your letters from home during personal time, much less anything else.

Not to hijack, but you already received the PTR? CIS changed for DS almost 2 weeks ago saying PTR had been mailed. So far, nothing. When did you receive yours?

I got my PTR packet Friday and it said something aong the lines of validating courses occur in the first few days after I-day and to bring a calculator for upperlevel math tests

Honestly, leave everything at home. No watches, no electric razors, no writing materials. You don't need clothing, either. Everything you'll need is issued to you.

As for study materials, most validation tests were within the first 3 or 4 days, well before you get your first mail delivery (usually a week in). Higher level validation tests were about 10 days in.

Aim for mostly food in care packages, since you'll barely have time to even open the box and look inside, much less sort through a bunch of junk and supplies.

Regardless, you're not going to have time to study anything. You get 30 minutes per day to conduct personal business, though your "personal time" is mostly assigned tasks...shower, change, thought-of-the-day, laundry, learning menus. I never once had time to write a letter during those 30-minute spans, and had to wait until Sunday morning when you get about two hours to yourself.

The less stuff you take on I-Day, the less stuff that will likely be taken away from you and stored (and hopefully not lost) until PPW or later.

The less non-consumable stuff that someone sends you, the less stuff you have to keep neat/organized in your room.

USNA will issue you everything you need. Almost anything you want right away is available at the MidStore. Once you're through PS, everything you could possibly want (stuff that can be purchased, that is) is available at the Annapolis Mall or via Internet ordering.

Where do we find our Alpha number? Is that the same as our candidate number?

wait can you explain what you mean by higher validation tests? someone earlier had mentioned that upper level classes were validated before the start of the academic year, but after plebe summer.
