Hello, I have been considering the ROTC program recently, and feel like i will fit in well. I am a junior in HS, (Will be a senior 2013-2014). I wanted to know what you guys thought my chances were to get into one of the ROTC programs? I am leaning towards Navy but havent made my mind up yet. Here's what i have so far:

-GPA: 3.93 UW/ 4.27 W (9-11) // 3.96 UW/ 4.4 W (10-11)
- 5 AP classes
- Class rank 5%
- State: CA, public school
- SAT 1890 ( 650 M, 630 CR) // no ACT yet
- 4 Years Football (2 varsity, Captain senior yr.)
- 4 Years basketball (2 varsity)
- 4 Years track
- Only 1 club, looking to start one next year
- Major: Electrical Engineering
-Schools looking at- UCLA, UMichigan, UIllinois, USD(2 brothers go here if that means anything)
-6'2" 220

I definately need to get my EC's up. I'm hoping that sports look good. I will be retaking the SAT. Let me know what your opinion is! Thanks!

Realrobo: You will never know unless you try.

I did want to point out that you need to be conscious of height/ weight standards. I just checked the Navy standards and at 74 inches, the maximum weight allowed is 211 lbs. Their are waivers based on body fat percentage however I don't know if they apply to an initial applicant (someone trying to get into the Navy vs someone in the Navy)

Good luck!

Realrobo: You look like a strong candidate. I would work on raising the SAT scores as the higher they are the better your chances. They are the only thing on your app that adheres to a national standard and are therefore given a lot of attention. Athletics and class rank look great. On ECs, I would only focus on doing things that you really enjoy and have your heart in.

You should take a look online at USMC, Navy, Army and Air Force web sites to get better sense of each service and the career opportunities they offer. This should help narrow down your service, or better said, your preferences. There is nothing wrong with applying for multiple ROTC scholarships. Also, get familiar with the scholarship selection criteria for each service as they are different. With some services (USMC and to a degree Army) your major won't matter or won't matter much. With others your choice of major matters.

I agree with kinnem and should have said so in my original post.

I would say that you are an extremely strong candidate for a 4 year Army ROTC Scholarship. School Choice is a big factor in this process. I do not know the stats for the west Coast schools but you have better stats than over half of the students that have received Army ROTC Scholarships to Marist College.

You appear to have already maxed out your points for Scholar and Athlete. You still need to serve in a leadership capacity in an organization other than athletics in order to max out your points under Leadership.

You would appear to be a slightly weaker candidate for Navy or AF based on greater competition for fewer slots. Can somebody from Navy and AF chime in here ?

I would focus on 3 things:

Add President of a HS Club to your resume
Improve your SAT score
Work on improving your raw scores in the 3 events of the APFT. You need 42/53/15:56 in order to contract.
