NROTC scholarship notification

I think it remains that way until you are either receive the scholarship or are rejected.

Mine hasn't changed at all. I applied April 30th 2012, it's been almost an entire year. Honestly, I've already started to contact units about joining their college program because I'm seriously starting to lose hope
I hope you get the scholarship but you are taking the correct steps for a plan B and it can't hurt your plan A either. Good job!

If you want a commission and you don't receive a scholarship, nor do you care about a specific school. Look at the MSISR program. Go to the website and look at the MSISR schools, then contact the school's unit directly.
No news here yet either; it's looked the same since early December. Still hoping, but DS was fortunate to get a full-tuition academic scholarship at his number one NROTC school choice, so he has contacted the unit at that campus to let them know if he doesn't get the NROTC scholarship (or accepted at USNA... still waiting there as well), the plan is college programmer at their school.

H2O Mom, that's awesome DS got a full academic scholarship. If you get the NROTC scholarship, understand that you will lose the academic scholarship. Since NROTC doesn't pay room & board, the only thing the NROTC would pay that is more than the academic scholarship is the $750 for books and the monthly stipend of $2500 freshman year and $3000 sophomore year. In other words, it doesn’t pay much more than the academic scholarship. You also would get about $800 for the 3/C and 2/C summer cruises. You may want to consider keeping the academic scholarship and going College Program. This will maximize your son’s GI Bill accrual for graduate school. NAVADMIN 187/09 (google it) states that: THE MINIMUM ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE REQUIREMENT FOR NAVAL ACADEMY GRADUATES AND NAVY RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS DOES NOT COUNT AS QUALIFYING ACTIVE DUTY TIME. What this means is your son could leave the Navy in 3 years with the ability to pay for 100% of his graduate school if he goes College Program. If he took the NROTC Scholarship, he would not be able to leave the Navy will a full GI Bill until after 8 years (5 years of active duty service requirement + 3 more years to maximize the GI Bill and activate Yellow Ribbon benefits-very important and lucrative). If he ends up staying in for a career, then this is irrelevant. But if he finds that a Navy career might not be for him, being able to leave with a full GI Bill after 3 years, vs. 8 years is a big difference. Check out the VA website for GI Bill info, especially the Yellow Ribbon program. My daughter will use my GI Bill (you can give it to family members) to attend the University of Michigan and it will pay $218,000 which is 100% of her Bachelors degree costs. Keep in mind that graduate tuition is even higher so the GI Bill is worth even more for graduate work. With the College Program, DS will still get a $3500 stipend his Junior year and a $4000 stipend his senior year, plus about $800 for his summer cruise after his Junior year. Hard to think years down the road when you're just sorting out college plans now, but this could make a big difference in how DS' life plays out down the road.

Double check with your university re stacking of scholarships. Some do and some don't. For example, our son got full tuition to University of Alabama. When his Army ROTC scholarship came through, the university allows his scholarship to be applied to room and board instead of tuition. Call the scholarship office.
This university waives room & board for ROTC scholarship recipients, which would lop $10k/year from school costs, so we really want that scholarship. He's wanted to be a career officer since elementary school, so I don't think he'll be leaving the service anytime soon, but it is good to have a bright side to look at if he doesn't get the NROTC scholarship.
Help?
DS has still not heard from NROTC and local recruiter is no help. Application status remains the same. Will he receive a no letter in the mail or will it only be posted on the site? We are down to the last days and he needs to commit to his college by May 1. At this point should we assume it is a NO?

As I recall my son received his initial 'NO' via email around April 15 (+ or - a couple days). A letter followed later. I don't think his portal was ever updated. You still have at least a week before you need to pull the trigger on plan B and Fedex overnight can extend that even further. Just be sure you have everything ready to go. I know the waiting is nerve-wracking. Been there done that.
Justine, we haven't heard yet either. Very anxious at this point to hear something. Should be any day now but this having us wait longer than any other admissions or scholarships (that DS has applied for, anyway) really is kind of lousy. Decisions have to be made and I hate leaving everything up in the air until the last minute. I'm starting to think, however, that no news at this point means a "no" and am planning on just sending in the deposit on Plan B if we've not heard anything by Friday.

If they knew it was going to be a no long ago, they would have told you. The fact that they haven't and it's this late means your child is/was on the cusp. You may get good news or you may get bad news, but I'm confident you'll get news in time to meet May 1 deadlines. It's not like they are unaware of this stuff. The waiting is a pain, but it's just waiting and not knowing. There is still plenty of time to patiently wait and still get deposits in.

BUT........ You can still hear good news at this late date. My daughter received her NROTC LREC scholarship on April 29, 2012. And she is currently enjoying her first year at her university.
Have your alternative plans ready; you can always cancel deposits to receive a refund if you receive a scholarship to another school.

It's the 29th and mine still says no decsion
PM P-Flying17 and see if she can give you any insight or information. I would plan on overnighting a deposit to a plan B tomorrow, if not already doing it today, just in case.
