I want to encourage everyone to become a member and actively support your local Parent's Association.

The Parent's Associations are here to support you and your Mid through the four years they are at the Academy. It creates a great social network of families who are going through or have gone through the KP experience. The NY/LI Parents Association also supports ALL MIDS by hosting cookouts and Ice Cream Socials throughout the year. They also support the mission of the ever popular Cookie Cafe. They open their homes to the Mids and are there to assist distant parents when needed and have supplied you with numerous pictures and videos of your PC throughout Indoc this year. I can't thank them enough for the job they do!

With that being said, on Parent's Weekend, tables will be set up by several parent organizations. Help support their cause by purchasing their items or by giving a donation. A pat on the back and a "Well Done" would also be appreciated.

Parent Organizations

Our Parents group actually started a mentoring program 3 years ago where an upper classman parent was paired with a plebe parent. I have throughly enjoyed being a part of it. Running thoughts and emotions by a 'been there, done that' parents gave me the wider understanding of what was going on at the Academy.

Even if there is no structured mentoring....call, email. write someone in the Parent group. We are here to give that listening ear and shoulder to cry on... Now that I am looking back on 4 years, I would have not survived without my dear friends at the Parent Organization.

Our Parent group is going to form an informal Alumni support group within the Parent group. We do not want to loose the friendships that we have forged over these years. We still want to support the mission of USMMA and get the word out to all the 'land lubbers' who have no idea of the Academy.:thumb:

Indeed, all good stuff and all part of the Kings Point extended family. As the parent of a 2012 grad and an older alumni myself I would further point out the obvious - 99.9% of the time when a midshiman or their family are going through some trying time or confused at least on living family of current or recent graduates as well as a couple alumni have dealt with the same situation and had to reconcile the same emotions, etc.

Both the Parents Association and the Alumni Foundation - particularly through their local chapters. These are all great resources and I have never seen any request go unresponded to in some positive fashion in over 34 years of part of the KP Family.

While at the academy I myself dealt with the sudden loss of one of my parents and other nearby parents and a couple of alumni, as well as a couple of people on the Commndant's Staff, a couple of my closest fiends/classmates and a couple of their Mom's and Dad's helped me through several related issues over the remaining time I had at KP and the first two years after I graduated. Indeed it was only very recently that I've been open and shared the experience with a broader group of my classmates at our 30th reunion ad subsequently when we were reminiscing about our times at KP. My point being, most of these people, at least in my experience understood how to keep things confidential and be discreet - at least the ones who helped me did - when doing so is called for or requsted.

You really cannot understand the strength and compassion of this "network" until you, yourself need it and it's there for you. It is far, far more than a bunch of us "spouting off" or whatever on forums like this. I strongly encourage everyone: parents, alumni and students to participate and support these types of efforts. I've done so for 30+ years since my graduation and it seems like no matter how much I put out there and into it, I never help but to feel I'm getting more out of it than I put in. Sorry for the "soapy" ramble, but as we all see regardless of our perspective, the time at USMMA (or any of the programs or academies in these forums) can indeed be a roller coaster ride for the students as well as their families.

I have not experienced it, but as a parent of current M/N there words are well written, inspiring and comforting. KUDOS!

Thanks jasper

Extremely well said Jasperdog. If anyone wants more information about the Alumni Foundation and the Parents Association please visit the website http://kpparents.com.

great comment Sea Faring Moose Mom

Great Idea regarding the pairing. We have people in WI who are staying connected with the Parent Association. Some won't go away and we love that! We learn about the industry, keep connections alive for the future. Our relationships are strong and definitely lifelong.
