FY 2013 Duty Station Assignments

DS started IBOLC this week. He called today to say that duty stations have been released. He will be going to Fort Drum 10th Mountain div. He said it was his 4th choice but he is still happy with it because they will be deploying around the time he finishes with ranger school.

Good luck to your son at IBOLC and ranger school. Sounds like he'll have about 15 minutes to enjoy the autumn splendor of upstate NY when he gets done.

Does Ft. Drum mean the ADSO you mentioned earlier (to get Vicenza in Italy) is nullified?

When I spoke with DS yesterday, he stated that he was told that Italy was still "a chance", but he's quite happy with Fort Drum because deployment as a PL interests him far more than Vicenza. He did say that another new LT at IBOLC who was in the middle of the oML received Vicenza without an ADSO, so maybe there is some merit to the argument that the Army doesn't load a duty station with all high OML scores. If he doesn't go to Italy, he will not be charged the ADSO for it.

This is his 3rd trip to Ft Benning for training (NG BCT, AIT/airborne, and now IBOLC/ranger school) and he actually likes Ft Benning. He's not a fan of Columbus, GA, but I agree that each station is what you make of it.

Last time I was at Ft. Polk, I liked it. It's a pretty big base and only a couple hours away from some good fishing :) I wasn't in training there though. Ft. Sam Houston is kind of a crappy base, but there is ALOT to do in the area since you're in the heart of San Antonio, TX. I'd suggest doing some water tubing in new braunfels, TX if you ever get a chance to. It's a blast and only about 45 minutes away from the base. Been to a few other bases as well, but years ago so I don't remember much of them.

Polk is tiny and one of the worst locations in the Army. You sure you were in the right place?

Drum is great if you are...

1. Married
2. Have kids
3. Love clouds
4. Hate daylight
5. Love long commutes
6. Love snow
7. Hate skiing
8. Have no desire to do anything cultural besides drink.

Otherwise, Drum can be a real downer.

Spent my first three years there. The post is nice. Watertown is not. The summer is amazing. It lasts from 30 June to about 31 August.

If he wants to make the most of it, he needs to live in Sackets Harbor.

You could add liking hunting, fishing, ice fishing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing to your lists. Or... indoor activities like sewing, knitting, or crocheting.

I heard from my DS today. His orders have come through and his duty station has been changed from Fort Drum to Vicenza, Italy.

So is that good news or so so news, will he still be deployed as a PL.

I would think as soon as he gets there, the answer would be very good news.

Congrats to your son.

DS is infantry...not as branch detail. He put in an ADSO for the 173rd in Vicenza which was in "pending" status in December. I thought I had read a powerpoint somewhere on the internet about a timeline which said early March. Just wondering because he was considering trading his Mustang for a 4x4 pick-up if he is stationed stateside. If he gets Italy, he's just going to buy a little beater there.

Tell him that this is not the way to bring his beater back to the states when he returns... :yllol:

I would say arbitrarily 50/50 and a maybe a lower chance if they are about to deploy but who knows. Hope for PL but prepare for S-shop, seems to be the trend with a lot of 2LTs I know and the 173rd is a very popular unit.

Is PL a certainty since he was awarded platoon honor graduate?

A lot will depend on his unit assignment, if I remember right he is heading to Italy.

If there is a PL slot available then he may be able to slide in right away.

Not sure Honor Grad will be that much help (Congratulations to your son by the way)

My son is toward the top of his Flight class, he's been told he'll just have to see if a PL slot is available when he reports, if not he'll work other positions until a slot opens up.

Has he started Ranger School yet?

Exactly right. No one will care that he's the honor grad. Just doesn't matter.

It'll depend purely on personnel flow.
