Just another example of the inmates running the asylum. Admiral Helis has decided to evict the USMMAAAF from campus regardless of all the good they have done for over 60 years at the Academy for the benefit of the midshipmen effective April 30th. This guy doesn't get it, nor does he belong at Kings Point!!!! It's time to ride him out on a rail! Funny how his alma mater, USMA has their foundation on campus rent free as does Sec. LaHood's Alma Mater Bradley Univ.

Eviction Notice

My wife called me as she saw the Facebook post and I just finished reading the article. I teach in the SUNY system so I'm perfectly aware of the silliness (to keep this forum PG) that comes down the pipe. However, this malicious and destructive behavior is a whole new level. I plan to contact various government officials as requested; I fear the time may be too short to stop this nonsense by April 30.

KP wants their own Alumni Association to pay.....$1.7 million to rent space at the Academy?

:eek::eek::eek:

Doesn't the Alumni Association RAISE money for the Academy?:confused:

Wow.

Just..........wow.

Exactly Luigi

Exactly Luigi...... The USMMAAAF does a tremendous amount of good for Kings Point so yes it would only make sense to have them pay $1.7M/year for space and not give the $ to KP for the benefit and support of the academy and of the M/N. Did I hear someone say moronic?????

Please contact your MOC's ASAP!

The DoT and MARAD have already started to circumvent the alumni association with regards to donations to the academy. An individual can now donate money directly to the academy.

I was already waiting for a certain person to leave before giving any money. This adds another name to my "list".

You know- Fort Schuyler did this about 10 years ago because SUNY and Adm Craine demanded that they sign an agreement basically allowing the school to dictate what positions the Alumni Association took on issues involving th efuture of the school. When the Alumni Association demurred because it would compromise their independence, they got thrown off campus and all formal ties were eliminated. That was all because the Alum association took the lead (and won)in fighting a plan to eliminate the ship and regiment and turn the campus into just another SUNY campus. They were instrumental in reinvigorating the traditional program and saved the school- but they clearly bent off some powers in the SUNY system doing so- and now they are known as the Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association as they can no longer use the NY Maritime name. so I wonder if this is a MARAD response to their activism over the firing of Admiral Greene ?

It has more to do with the Board of Directors and the vision of the school.

Bizarre

Wow, I thought someone was pranking when I read this thread. Then I read the Alumni website, not so funny anymore. I am the proud parent of a 2010 grad and I have another future "favorite mid" finishing his sophomore year of H.S. This is a national attention grabber. I'd love to see the Super. on a Colbert or Daily Show interview explain this one.
I was willing to give a West Pointer the benfit of the doubt when he was appointed, but this is clearly not a good fit for the good Colonel, nor the Academy.

Luigi: Absolutely Money raised in 2012 by the "Reunion Classes" and given in October at Homecoming alone totaled ~$2,000,000 - I know that isn't in the League of the USMA, USAFA, and/or USNA Alumni Donations but their living alumni are significantly larger in number than either USMMA or USCGA.

Also to put the $29.00/sq ft in perspective in recent past I hada lease for Class A+ Office space in Manhattan on the 18th Floor of 1 Penn Plaza (a landmark building with views of the Hudson on one side and the Empire State Building on the other, for $34.00/sq foot with all services included. The Babson Center space currently occupied by USMMAAAF is not even Class C space, above what used to be the motor pool garage and in space that was unused and had been unoccupied for a significant period of time prior to the USMMAAAF using it. To say that the lease rate and conditions proposed were significantly "above market" would not be anything but understatement.

Absolutely redic. As a cadet at CGA I benefitted so much from the good that the USCGAAA did. I have no doubt that KPers get the same benefit from their alumni association. In the end, midshipmen lose.

$2M is VERY impressive. What the heck are they thinking?

And.... WHY IS THIS HAPPENING IN ONE WEEK?

Very Confusing

My daughter, a Second Classman, is really pissed. AAf has been very helpful to her.

There's some sort of back story here that's not out yet. That said, I find it unbelievable that the academy isn't out in front of this story, no matter who is the "bad guy". The PIO must realize we all get incensed about this sort of stuff.

Could this also be a kickback for the deal that Adm Greene had worked out with the AAF to financially support the Admiral's "Strategic Plan" which Marad subsequently refused to approve???

This has been going on since Nov.

The lack of communication is not surprising to anyone here. The view on the forum seems to be that the current MN don't know what's going on in the grand scheme of things, just like to complain, need to grow up, etc etc. Well, this is simply a good example of the utter BS we have had to deal with from the current administration who, need I remind, haven't quite been here as long as the average campus squirrel.

It has a lot to do with what went on with RADM Greene USN (ret)

I have a son who is going to be a prep-school kid this year, and he is nervous about the current situation with the federal government as a whole. I can't speak about the USMMA which my son sincerely desires to attend, but as a former Marine officer, I always wanted the guidance of "those who had gone before". This whole thing is very disturbing to me. The most important moment in my son's decision to go here is his tour from Mr. Racketts last summer. How can you toss that away without a full review of it's value to USMMA. I wondered how a USMA grad could run the most prestigious maritime university in the country. I guess I know now.

My take on this: La Hood has a bee in his bonnet(to put it very politely), and Helis is feeling the pressure, and taking it out on the mids and the alumni. It's my understanding that what MARAD wants, they get. So it's time to get a KPer in the lead at MARAD. The question is, HOW DO WE DO THAT????
