Just curious...what are the report date trends for those graduating in the next month...rated and not rated?

Just curious...what are the report date trends for those graduating in the next month...rated and not rated?

I can give you the trends from last year and the few years before.

The two primary factors are 1) commissioning date and 2) AFSC. Cadets who commission later in the spring will generally EAD later. Also, cadets going into AFSCs that are backed up with people trying to go through initial training will EAD later.

For instance, I commissioned into an AFSC that is pretty backed up as far as training goes. So I was the last person from my Det to EAD. But my Det had our commissioning date pretty early in the spring. So because of that, I was one of the first people in my AFSC to EAD (beginning of October). People in my AFSC who commissioned in late May/early June just recently started EADing (March/April).

The pilot-selects from our Det EAD'd almost immediately after graduation. They have several different training bases for pilots, as opposed to most other career fields, so they can push people through somewhat faster. Combine that with the fact that we commissioned relatively early compared to other Dets and that explains why our pilot-selects got to UPT so fast.

That was the trend for the last couple of years. I don't see it getting any better since the AF is still above its mandated active duty end strength.

If you're looking to make post-graduation plans based on EADs, I wouldn't recommend setting anything in stone. The EADs that AFPC gives out before/after graduation are really quite useless. Originally, they said I would EAD right after graduation. Then they said I'd have to wait the full 365 days to EAD. Then I ended up getting orders to EAD in October. So I wouldn't make any serious plans until you have hardcopy orders in hand.

Good luck!

I would think by now they have their EADs in hand. However beware it is not set in stone until they have orders in hand.

Our DS started with an EAD May 10th..it was pulled as soon as they were informed he would not commission until May 26th. His next EAD was May 30th. That was pulled as soon as they realized that they had to give him 3 days travel. The next one was Aug. That was pulled for whatever reason. He landed up reporting Sept 30th.

Most rated board students will also do 6-9 months casual status. They typically will come home for Xmas, so if it messes with family vacation plans, you can try to delay them until the holidays. Don't expect them to come home for xmas once they are in UPT/UNT/RPA as students.

Things have changed since my husband was an IP at Laughlin from '04-'07. Back then training shut down for 2 weeks at Christmas, most students bolted for the break. Some even went into leave "debt". It was a hard time for students just starting in a training phase...a big disruption if you we're a handful of flights from an initial solo or check ride....

It is still the same. Son graduated from UPT at Laughlin in February and he was home for almost a week over Christmas and then in Minnesota for a few days for a classmate's wedding. They had to be back on base January 2. It was indeed a rough break time-wise for his UPT class since most of them were prepping for their final formation check ride when they got back.

Yes, it indeed has changed.

DS verified it this past Dec. when he was on casual status.

They were all allowed to go in the hole. They were told the reason why was due to the fact that come next yr. you will fly until the 23rd and starting flying again on the 26th. They may have already had in their mind if sequestration occurred, that for his class after Oct 1st they would be playing catch up to get back on track.

Thus, don't even think of asking for it! This is for Laughlin.

Our DS's class is @ 1 yr behind Stealth's DS. His class is following suit, they will be getting a long weekend for 4th of July (5 days), and most students have already placed their plans in place. DS will be coming back to the east coast for the long weekend of Memorial Day and 4th of July, but that will be the last for the yr. and probably until he graduates next March.

Our DS did go in the hole. He had about 8 days, and came home for 12. He was on casual status until the 1st week of Feb.. He went to IFS for Feb., came home(LAFB) March 8th. Started UPT April 2nd.

His close friend went to Columbus in Aug., @ 8 weeks before him. She did not start IFS until 1 week before DS graduated from IFS. Her UPT class start date was one month behind his.

I am saying that so you understand they may have an early EAD, but it might be for a longer time on casual status.

In DS's class, Fencer's DS (AFA grad 12) was casual status also. For rated expect casual status at the very least. With sequestration, AFROTC grads may find out that they will not go AD until Oct 1st.

Think about it logically. They are cutting flight hrs, it would make sense that they are not going to pay them to be on casual status for 6-9 months prior to reporting to IFS or UPT.

Xposted with Stealth. It might be different for our DS because he started UPT in April, thus he would not be as far along as Stealth's DS.

Right now I am trying too just keep all of the dates he is spewing at me in order. I know somewhere in Sept. he will track.

Long Wait

My son was commissioned at graduation in May. He is going in a technical field, not as a pilot. Initially he was told he would enter active duty in September. He got a job in retail to get some money coming in for a while.

He was recently told that date was now next May (one year) so he is looking for work in his field.

Are there any limits?

limits as to what?

Time frame of the latest date? Time frame to how short of a notice he may be given before reporting? Reporting the employer to AF?

Sorry - time limits regarding how long he can be in limbo. So far he has had 3 dates for starting active duty. In theory, could this go on for a couple of years?

One of your questions triggered another. Is he supposed to report any job he takes to the AF?

Our DS had 3 different dates before it finally stayed the same. I know your DS is not going rated, but to place it into perspective if he has to attend a school, than it is all about their pipeline. Last yr. many went casual status before their actual school. Due to FY14 budget cuts, it is probable that they aren't sending everyone casual status prior to their class start date. This is what has occurred in yrs past when money was not flowing.

He doesn't have to inform the AF regarding the job, but be prepared they can move up his start date.

Thanks for the info. He is waiting for his school. I'll let him know this info.

The time limit is 365 days between commissioning and EAD. After a year, the AF is required to bring him on active duty if they haven't done so yet.

He doesn't have to report any job to the AF. I worked a crappy job for several months before EAD and no one has ever asked me what I did. The only time I'll ever have to report it is when I get re-investigated for my security clearance. During that period of "limbo" he will essentially be a civilian (inactive reserve). His only military commitments are to 1) stay out of trouble and 2) update his detachment with any changes to his contact info or address, so they can write up his orders when the time comes.

Just be prepared that they move the date up. Typically orders are cut 6 weeks prior. If a slot opens up than they may place him in it.

I forgot to say he doesn't have to tell the AF unless the position is tied somehow to the DoD. The employer needs to be informed too. The reason why is it can be seen as a conflict of interest.

IOTW, if he goes off to work with Booz Allen or Lockheed and got a security clearance last yr via AF, plus he is considered right now AF personnel (Reserves), he will need to complete paperwork from the AF side giving him permission to work for the company.

Additionally, there will be the ethical/moral question if he does not inform them that he will be leaving within a yr or sooner.

The way the system works is a queue. DOR plays into the queue. I.E. assume your DS commissioned in May, he will go before those commissioned in Aug. He will go before those commissioned in Dec or next May. It is not going to go on for years. They will need to have him ADAF before next yrs commissioning class goes ADAF.

For him there is an upshot if he intends to make it a career. His pay and rank is not tied to AD, but his commission date. IOTW, come May 15 he will get O1 and 2 yrs pay even though he has only been in for a yr. Same is true for retirement. He could actually leave under the current system with less than 20.

His DOR will be determined by taking his commissioning date and his ADAF date, divided in 1/2. For example: Bullet commissioned in the end of May, his report date was the beginning of March. His DOR was Oct. I.E. he pinned on O2, and O3 in Oct. His field grade boards were for the next yr group because it was Oct., not Sept.

Our DS commissioned in end of May. Reported end of Sept. His DOR will be Aug 1st. He will get his 2 yr bump in May, and pin O2 Aug 1st.

Hope that helps to understand the system.

My son commissioned May 13, and was told his EAD would be Sept 30.
He was planned to go to Yokota AFB, after logistics school.

He was just notified his EAD has been pushed back to May 2014. Some of his friends have also been notified today that theirs have changed as well to May 2014. It seems to be a blanket wide push back as all his friends are in different job areas. I assume this is budget related, but if such a delay is happening now, arent they going to have to cut the numbers commissioning and going to field training?

Since his new date is one year and 4 days from his exact commissioning date, will he lose his job assignment and just go back into the pool of names?

Its always possible, but not likely. That May 2014 date is just a placeholder until AFPC can get a better idea of when to bring more Lts onto active duty. There are alot of factors that go into that, like the budget for FY14 (as you mentioned) and the AF's active duty end strength requirements. Its possible his date could turn out to be in May '14, or Oct '13, or somewhere in between. But don't make any serious plans until he has hardcopy orders in hand.

bump. Asking the same question again...any c/o 2013 grads with orders in hand or already on active duty?
