It has been officially announced that due to the sequester, the annual NYC city Fleet Week has been canceled for 2013.

the only time ill be on a shore command for fleet week and its cancelled...outstanding.

Good.

Meanwhile, in the rest of the war-fighting world, units are doing without huge chunks of their training budget. The dog-and-pony shows should always be the first items on the chopping block.

I agree, The up side is the Coast Guard ships based in Seattle will have renwed interest during or Seafair.

Well- actually no it's not for the best- it's short sighted and foolish because virtually no one in NYC knows about, is exposed to, or for the majority even cares about the US Military, and this is one event where they not only see what they are paying for, but they got to see the people that they are paying for. It's only a better alternative than shorting operational units of critical personnel or training time while still performing nonmission critical events.

This assumes that the premise of "cancelled due to sequestration" is valid.

"Cancelled due to sequestration" is valid. I do find the attacks by Congress on agencies impacted "humorous" considering the President and OMB proposed sequestration, and Congress created/approved it.

What's the price tag on Fleet Week?

Yes, I know it also brings $$ to NYC, but honestly, NYC isn't hurting for $$.

Huh? That interest has translated into a few articles online and a few politicals fighting for their turf. There hasn't been an uprising of support in the northwest. In fact, when I was there (Port Angeles), they weren't exactly the biggest Coast Guard fans.

The Coast Guard has always been popular in the Seattle Metro area, when they open the base and cutters for tours there is always a line. Now that the Navy won't have their ships docked in Seattle for Seafair, the only game in town will be the Coast Guard, I expect they will be busy during this time.

Interesting about your experience with PA, back in my day the CG was well thought of in that area, of course the ships still had sails that long ago.

Apparently back in the early 2000s or some there was "race-related" issues. Bad guys: the locals. And then, apprently it came back up a few years later, but this time it was a Coastie who cried wolf.

It probably didn't help that after 9/11/01 they moved USCGC ACTIVE from the pier down town to the Spit, behind a nice locked fence with the other cutters.

I think there is a disconnect between what people see from the Coast Guard, what they think the Coast Guard does, and what they think the service needs.

And the Coast Guard does it to itself. Maybe the public would think differently if the Coast Guard showed off some rust buckets instead of the latest pretty hi-tech toy.

And don't worry, I'm only 29 but I'm starting to feel old too.

Just becasue they say it doesn't make it true. If DOD/DON wants to move money around all they have to do is ask. It happens every year. Any negative impact from sequestration is bad managment on the part of the Department/Agency.

I was under the impression they didn't have much latitude to determine where cuts would hit. Hard to justify furloughs while whooping it up at "parties."

Budgets aren't affected by Fleet Weeks. The services have no issues with recruiting. I just can't image this not being on a chopping block.

Armed Forces day at the Washington Nationals game had one Army video and one Army singer. No fly over. No recruiting booths (at least none I saw, could have been in a different area)... Just the environment we live in. Until I get my $$, I'm OK with outreach programs feeling the sqeeze. We didn't even have "Take your child to work" day.

Once the money is appropriated, the department/agency can't move the money between accounts (personnel, construction, R&D, etc.), that is a big big no-no and can end in jail time. What you can do is go back to congress with an alternate plan and request to move the money around. How many dept./agencies actually came up with an alternate plan and asked to move money?

Specific programs face these issues every year, significant money gets taken away mid-year and they all figure out how to make it work beyond shrugging their shoulders and blaming congress. If a GS-13 can do it why can't a Cabinet Secretary or Agency Head? Thats why If I was still working for uncle sam I would be furious with my senior leadership in the Department. I play softball with a bunch of GSes and Mil, some of them have been told to expect furloughs through FY2015 ... really!?!?
