I have received a 4 year Type 7 AFROTC scholarship. I will be attending the University of Colorado, Boulder (IS). I have read on here that my stipend starts once I contract, however a member of the det told me that I will begin receiving it once school starts my freshman year, even if I have not contracted.
Which is correct?

No stipend until you contract.

Someone else will have a more definite answer but I believe you have been told correctly. I believe AFROTC pays the stipend even before you contract. You may be referring to comments about AROTC, they don't pay the stipend until your contracted.

You're kidding me. AFROTC pays before you contract? Wow! Well, I guess it makes sense. The poor little kids will need money when they head to the golf course.

I could also be totally wrong, which means I probably should not answer questions without really knowing. I guess that's what happens when you find yourself sitting on the couch with a Spring Cold.

I got a cold too, I hope I did not pass it on through the forum.

AFROTC stipends do not occur until contracted.

Exception: field training pay

I think I know where I got confused.

AFROTC cadets don't need to pass their PT Test before they contract, that's where I got confused.

.... I was waiting for someone to say something!!

Please, we didn't start getting paid until half way through the 1st semester, about 1.5-2 months after contracting, and I got my book money for this semester in late march. To answer the OP's question, don't expect any money soon.

Now that sounds more like what I was expecting!

Wow, why did it take so long to start getting your stipend, did they pay you retroactive or did it just start late, That's a long wait for book money as well.

Read Non Ducor's post again.

Spring semester he got hi book stipend in March. DS's school didn't start until after Jan 25th. Mar for him would be 4-5 weeks. He was not saying he got fall semester in late March, he was saying spring semester.

You will not get a penny until you pass your PFA and officially contract. Understand the pay; you are paid in arrears. Also AF has a cut off date for each pay period.

I.E. Pass your PFT on the 6th, contract on the 7th. Cut off date for the 15th pay period was the 5th.

You will get zip on the 15th because you missed the cut off date.

The 1st of the month pay is not the 15th-30th, it is actually the 1st -15th. You will get paid on the 1st per diem from the 7th to the 14th.

If it is 250 per month and you contract on the 7th, expect nothing for the mid month. Expect for the 1st pay check on the 1st 60 bucks. 250 a month. 125 1st and 15th, 60 a week.

School starts Aug 1st. Don't expect a penny until Sept 1st.

I got what he said, I was just surprised it took that long to get the book money, Son's battalion usually gets their book money before the semester starts, if they are contracted.

Still seems like a long wait, 1.5 to 2 months after contracting to receive the first stipend. AFROTC sure has a different accounting system.

Jcleppe,

I don't know why it takes so long, but they tell you to expect it for your 1st semester, after that stipend comes sooner, but book money always comes way after you need it. Tuition money always comes way after the payment deadline too, I just let my Bursars office know I'm ROTC and they put in "ghost money" so my classes don't get cancelled. I think I got one or two extra payments at once when they actually got around to paying it, but it was pretty all over the place. To be honest, I didn't keep close track of it, I was just happy to get paid:shake:.

Pima is right that I was talking about book money for this semester was sent in late march, but I started school Jan 7 so the wait was a bit longer than that, I just save up the money I get from the previous semester for next semester's books.

Edit: I think your right, AFROTCs method seems to be reimbursement. I hear form the POC that it doesn't get any better, but you will get used to it, if that's any consolation lol. I mean hey, what matters the most is that you do get it...eventually:thumb:

Jcleppe,

For our DS at his det. He had to submit the receipt for the books as proof that he purchased them.

AF is basically a retroactive organization. They pay in arrears.

In all of the yrs he was in AFROTC as a cadet we always laid out the money for his books.

Our deal was:

We paid for the books, the reimbursement was his spending money/allowanceT. It was up to him to make sure they did it.

I he didn't get the money back, that was his fault!

For our DS, his school started Tuesday after Labor Day. Mid Oct through the 1st week of Nov. his bank account was constantly having different deposits.

He is an ADAF retiree dependent, we knew and explained to him why the amounts were different.

Just saying don't flip out if on Sept 1st you don't get a deposit even if yu showed up on the 22nd. It works out in the end, because you may leave college on the 7th of May, but get paid the full amount on the 15th.

Believe it or not, my son has still not received his tuition money for the semester and they will be finished for the year next Friday! He just got his book stipend the end of March. The Detachment has been checking with headquarters for over a month now and our detachment is not the only one who hasn't yet received their money. It has been a slow moving problem the whole semester. The school knows they will eventually get their money so it isn't necessarily a problem but it would be nice to have it before summer break. I would be more nervous for a cadet who is to commission next week, if the school doesn't get the tuition paid before graduation I can't see them being able to graduate and then that throws a whole monkey wrench into commissioning if someone isn't able to graduate
