What kinds of travel are covered by an NROTC scholarship? I've read in multiple places that I receive reimbursement for travel and was wondering exactly what kind of travel I am covered for. For example, if I wanted to fly to michigan to visit my friend on a break, would the flight ticket be reimbursed?

Also on a side note, how many NROTC scholarships are given out? I'm curious because if I spend a whole 4 years at Rensselaer, it will cost the navy about 160,000 in tuition alone. Along with other fees and whatnot it would certainly seem to approach the maximum of 180,000. I'm guessing around maybe 2000 or so?

NROTC pays for scholarship students’ initial transportation from home to school... that's one time only. The Navy also pays for travel expenses from school or your home to the cruise site and your return to home each summer. Flying anywhere else, to visit a friend for a weekend, to go home for holidays, even to go home for the summer, is all on your dime.

Just pulled out my DS's orders authorizing him to report freshman year. It states: "You will only be reimbursed for your travel expenses from your present address/location to your assigned NROTC college or university at the government transportation rates. As such, if you plan to travel via commercial air, it is stongly recommended that you obtain the least expensive fare available. You will not be reimbursed for any overnight stay in a hotel or for a use of rental car(s)."

This was NROTC two years ago.

Yeah sorry if this was a nubbish question, thanks for the answers though I really couldn't find anything specific before.

Certainly no need to apologize, you'll never know unless you ask.

No worries, all questions are good. You will build knowledge and experience and lead others in several years.

Keep asking and best wishes.

Out of curiosity, on the NROTC side - how likely is it to get the initial transportation reimbursement?

Is it like AROTC - where you almost guaranteed of not getting reimbursed?

100% of my DD's NROTC class that were on scholarship received travel pay which was based on mileage reimbursement from home to school regardless of how they got there(plane, train, bike etc...)

I agree. Never heard of any reimbursement issues.

I've not really heard of issues either. I got reimbursed without ever asking about it. Granted I live ~3 hours from school and never expected it.
