Air Force Academy cadet has been convicted

It's the end of the line for former Air Force Academy football star Jamil Cooks.

The AFA junior has been kicked out of the Air Force following his court-martial conviction on sex charges.

A star linebacker with the Falcons, Cooks won't have to do any additional jail time. He was released on "time served" after being incarcerated last December.

As of press time, it is uncertain whether or not Cooks will be required to pay back the government for the three years college education he received at Colorado Springs.

Released, no more jail time.

Released, no more jail time.

If he was in since last December, he has the same time in as my classmate... who was let out a month early on good behavior. He may be out but that felony sure follows him around.

My best friend from the AF was "dismissed" via GCM after making a mistake...that was in 1987.

To this day, it prevents him from a LOT of things...he's got an engineering PhD...is an international award winner for his scientific writing (published over 400 times) and yet...he can't testify as an expert in court because he's immediately "impeached" because of the GCM. It has prevented him getting jobs that would have him "riding easy street" now at age 52...

This will follow this young man for life.

Is his punishment enough to deter similar incidents in the future?
Doesn't it seem too lenient?
Is zero tolerance regarding these types of offenses real?
For balance, how would this have played out if it were in a civilian university?

UNfortunately this maybe how it plays out:

Notre Dame had not one, but two, players credibly accused of sexual assault on its national championship bowl team. Neither is being brought to justice, because one of the victims committed suicide and the other was so intimidated by teammates that she was too afraid to press charges.

Why is this uncertain, if he had been an ROTC cadet on scholarship there would not even be a discussion, he would owe the money back, period. Why should it be different at an Academy where the cost of an education is touted as being so high.

great question

This is a great question! There are kids who have been dismissed from NROTC for being 8 lbs overweight ( 6 weeks prior to commissioning) and forced to pay back over $190K! I live outside of Colorado Springs and we see on the news about every other month where a cadet is dismissed for one thing or another. I wonder how many of those kids had to pay?
