More AirForce Sexual Abuse

This one is unbelieveable - The officer in charge of sexual abuse prevention is charged with sexual battery. Is the Air Force really this bad or does the press just jump on AF related stories?

1 idiot does not make "the Air Force really this bad." This behavior is inexcusable and unacceptable anywhere, especially in the military. I don't see any positives coming out of this other than the slime ball got caught and was injured by the victim.

+1 to Dad. And the press WILL be all over this if for no other reason than the position the individual held... as well they should. It certainly reflects poorly on the Air Force but it doesn't make the Air Force bad. It would reflect poorly on any organization this person belonged to.

Not sure this belongs on this section. This has nothing to do with the Academy.

Parents Trying to Understand the Culture

Not sure if this is accurate, but the news reported that he is an Academy graduate. So comes the 'stretch' analysis of what is the culture at the Academy (Above the law'? Lack or respect for women?...) and does it extend to the leadership of the AF?

My young son heard the report this morning before school and said: "I really don't think you all should let (sister) go to that summer seminar thing at the academy this summer. If leaders get drunk and do this kind of stuff to women, who, who keeps her safe?!?!" (he is young and not fully clear on academy vs. Af and had until recently a belief that all service men were heroes).
That, I think, is the kind of reaction that leads to rampant fear. Have to say, I am not immune to it.

Another person, however, told us "Every SA and branch carries the trophy for bad behavior at one time or another and gets mega attention for it...right now it seems to be USAFA". Sigh.

I am glad the discussion is here as we are regularly told to be sure D wants to enter the service, not just the academy. So, should not discussion of leadership in the service be part of the analysis of decisions about attending the academy?

He's AFA. Yes it belongs here.

It has been said too many times here. An Academy is the military. If your kid doesn't want to be in the military don't go to the academy. Helio parents and love to brag about their kids, some reason going to the Air Force Academy is ranked up there with Harvard:yllol: (send your kid to a college dude on scholarship or non-scholarship/loan-free, THAT IS something to brag about).

Are Questions and Discussions Harmful?

I am not sure why a discussion of leadership or of the SA in general makes you think one does not want (or want their child) to be in the military? How does a discussion of issues and a gathering of information equate to a lack of a desire to serve? Does not knowledge and information help make informed decisions?

Stella, Your question separates the two (and not really directed at you, but to anyone that talks about it separately. My comment only addresses the way you (and others on this board) tend to write about the academies and then military life separately. The AFA is the military.

In regard to this thread topic:

1. He hasn't been found guilty of said issue.

2. Article said he was drunk. It has been said on numerous times to be careful if you drink as a cadet at AFA (boys - respect others; girls - respect others)

3. One always needs to be respectful when they are not drinking.

The smart move is never to be drunk... which is what I will remind my son of when he gets home for a few days next week.

:thumb: Thats my motto!

:thumb: You are right, it starts with parents (and other adults to always send those reminders). Mine do this all the time.

Parents, coaches, teachers, boss, friend's parents, family members, and most importantly friends, roommates, and classmates

Got it, in terms of AFA is the military. I do think those of us with no background tend to separate the two, as you point out. It is all a learning process. Seems that those on the board do too in other ways (consider the posts and agreements to it that indicate that this topic should not be here since it is AFA and not AF...?)

I also agree with the post about the dangers of drinking. We tell our older kids (and now younger one) this all the time...boys and girls. Nothing good comes from being drunk or being around drunk people...no matter who they are.
Don't put yourself in either position (being drunk or being around those who are).

Wow, this is rather ironic. It's shocking that the SARC briefings didn't work.

On a more serious note, I'm incredibly thankful that the victim was vigilant. This is the best possible ending for a crime that could have ended much more tragically. If found guilty, I just hope that the verdict won't be overturned by command discretion.

A 0-10 paygrade General just resigned not that long ago. This isn't exclusive to the AF.

The guy is an O5. He was AFA a long time ago. Seems to be quite a stretch to lay the blame or stigma on AFA at this point.

I have to agree with this statement, he has long been removed from the AFA.

As far as this being a topic discussed on this thread....the heading of this thread is "Academy/Military News", I think this qualifies as Military News.

It was just moved from the AFA forum. I think it is in its correct place now.

Regards the appropriateness for this thread, I read the thread title as "Academy/Military news." Thus I conclude any military news is appropriate, and this surely fits.
This news is on top of the also recent report that while the reported number of sexual assaults in the military have appeared stable; those concerned with the issue also ask 'who may have been assaulted but didn't report it.' That number was an order of magnitude larger than the 'official reported' cases and (working from memory here) went up by 50% year over year. Yeah, I know, 'a few bad apples' and all that, but it does seem that an 'attitude adjustment' (perhaps like the one delivered in connection to the gay service members) is in order. Perhaps I should say 'another attitude adjustment" as I am reminded that this sort of scandal bubbles up from time to time (eg Tailhook and the AFB in Texas, and each of the Academies in turn). Perhaps only Congress has a record on moral shortcomings that is more abysmal.
On another thread we read of a ROTC member drummed out for a few pounds overweight and required to pay back an enormous sum. Perhaps that kid should get the break on 'standards' and given time to correct, while the sort of trash that this accused AF guy represents should be drummed out/loss of retirement / and pay back their cost of education.
A Dad with daughters... one of whom lives not too far from where this 'officer' is accused of acting on his impulses.

This is an appropriate topic/issue for this forum as it is "military news." It was moved from the USAFA forum because, even if guy is a USAFA grad (and I haven't researched this), this article/issue is not directly relevant to the Academy.

Thanks,

Your friendly mod.
