Our DD got a call last night (and it also showed up on her USAFA portal) that she was being offered a Falcon Scholarship to one of the prep schools. She has 3 days to make a decision. She had given up hope since finding out she didn't make it into the academy, so this came out of left field. I don't know much about this. Does anyone have experience with this or advice? Many thanks.

It's a fantastic opportunity for anyone who truly wants to go to the academy. It greatly increases (almost guarantees) the chance of getting an appointment the following year assuming the student does well at their prep school. I didn't receive a Falcon Foundation Scholarship, but I have a couple friends who have. One is at the academy now (USAFA: 2016!), and the other (Haleym) is an appointee for the class of '17. Perhaps she can give you some more information. Alternatively, you can search the forums or visit the Prep School forum for more information.

My son was a Falcon Scholar and it was an awesome experience. He is currently at the academy (class of 2014). My advice is reply back immediately that your daughter will take the scholarship. They will allow you a little bit of time to research the different prep school options and choose the one that is right for her. She really can't go wrong with any of the options given!

Best of luck and congrats!

First, congratulations! I remember when our DD got her FF offer last year...such a great opportunity:thumb:

If she is serious about wanting to attend USAFA she should take the scholarship. If she completes all of the requirements (info available on the FF website) she is basically assured an appointment.

There are several schools to choose from so she will need to determine which one suits her needs the best. Our DD chose to attend Northwestern Preparatory and loved it:smile: She received her appointment in February and we are just enjoying our last few months with her at home.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions and congratulations again:biggrin:

DS was a Falcon Scholar at NWP in 2011. Now he is at USAFA (2016). He has said it was the best prep he could have had and he continues to enjoy his friends from NWP. If she really wants to be at USAFA, she should take the scholarship.

If you want the Academy, FF has been referred to as the "golden ticket." I went to NWP, feel free to PM me with any questions.

Another Falcon here, just graduated the program at MMI and have my appointment. If your daughter is interested in MMI as a school or if you're looking for any general information, feel free to PM me as well. Best wishes!

We are in the same boat as you so I don't have prior experience, but DS accepted his FF a few days ago and chose MMI. The things we looked at (and I'm not saying theyre right or wrong) were: 1. He preferred a full year program to a half year which cut out NWP (though I would say there have been a lot of great comments about NWP and a great location) and 2. He wanted the military experience which ruled out Greystone and NWP and maybe another??). Also, we have a friend whose son attended MMI and loved it so it helped having someone we know personally make the recommendation. It's really up to what's important to your DD and your family.

I want to thank haleym too - your posts about MMI also contributed to his decision!

I do have a question for current FFs though - when did you all get your appointments? Will it be May again before DS hears anything? Just trying to plan ahead for another year of seemingly endless mailbox stalking lol!!

Congrats on your DS going to MMI as a Falcon. Last year Falcons were notified of their appointments on May 1. This year they heard in the end of February. But if you plan on hearing back next year on May 1, anything earlier will be a pleasant surprise. Keep in mind that as long as your DS does what he is told and stays out of any trouble, an appointment for the Class of 2018 is his.

I feel your pain as we have gone through the waiting. All I can advise is to "keep calm and carry on". . .

Glad to have helped! The program did its job for me and the other falcons here- all of us earned our appointments. MMI is a great choice and I am very pleased with the outcome (as are my parents!). And you are right, you are pretty much just signing up for another year for another year of waiting... But this time the outcome is much more certain. It will be worth the wait, regardless of how long they take to review the falcons the next time around. :thumb:

On a side note, Lt. General Kelley (from the foundation) spoke at our convocation, and his speech was very thought provoking and humorous at the same time. He really cares about his falcons and is very dedicated in everything he does. Your son is in good hands, both in the FF's and at MMI. Tell him to get ready for those 'chair force' jokes, though! Haha

Thanks again haleym! Can't wait to hear about the 'chair force jokes' lol. Best of luck to you at the Academy.

Wow! Thank you for all of the advice and support. I appreciate all of your thoughtful posts. I have learned a lot!

Congratulations to ALL!!!

The Falcon Foundation is a superb group and if they've contacted you...my advice?

Give it SERIOUS thought!!

My DS also attended NWP with a Falcon Foundation scholarship last fall. He will tell you it was a great decision. He was set to attend one of the best schools in the country for aero/astro, and would have loved the traditional college experience. However, the AFA has always been his dream school and the FF pretty much guarantees them an appointment with the next class if they meet certain requirements. He walked away from the civilian school without a second thought.

The Durbecks offer a challenging and rewarding experience at NWP. My son appears to be very well prepared for what comes ahead...or, at least significantly better prepared than last year...I know this summer will be tough. He made some great friends and had a lot of fun. I highly recommend the NWP program.
