DD has been offered this opportunity and until last night I thought she was going to turn it down and stick with her current choice (Boston College and an Army ROTC Scholarship). She is rethinking this option but is not all that excited about taking the ACT for the 10th time. Her scores are:

English - 34
Writing - 31
Reading - 30
Math - 28
Science Reasoning - 27

Does anyone know if this is a requirement?

My DD attended NWP as a FF scholarship recipient and retaking the ACT and the SAT was a requirement at that school. I believe she took the SAT 3 times and the ACT twice while she was there. She received her appointment to USAFA in Feb.

If your scores are high enough (650+ or 30+) you can apply for a waiver from the Foundation. Of course, I'm sure a lot of the prep schools make taking the test mandatory for all students.

Trust me, I wasn't super excited about having to take the tests again. However, in the scheme of things, it's really not that big of a deal. Besides, I managed to bring up my scores considerably :thumb:

I get that she isn't looking forward to taking the ACT yet again. But USAFA will require her to perform many activities that she would rather not perform. She needs to really consider what she is willing to do to go to USAFA. If the little things like a few more ACTs are really causing her heartburn then USAFA is probably not the right spot for her. The Falcon program has a very good track record. All the participating schools know what is needed of appointees and cadets. But USAFA is a very different college experience than Boston College. In fact, night and day different. Her hesitation maybe an indication that at some level she gets this and will be more successful with the BC experience . . .

I was at NWP last semester and I wasn't thrilled about re-taking the ACT/SAT either... But she probably should want to get all of her ACT scores in the 30s. I had similar scores to her's before I went to NWP but now I have all my scores in the thirties and even a 36 in a subject.

Also, (at least at NWP) the weekends that you take standardized tests are also free weekends. Taking the test isn't that bad when you know that you have the rest of the weekend off when you're done!

My son was a Falcon scholar at MMI. He had high enough scores that he was not required to do the SAT prep course or retake the SAT or ACT. I believe there were 2 other falcons in the same situation. The being said he did not find that out until after he had enrolled at MMI and was getting his assigned classes. I am not sure if you could find out prior to attending the prep school of your choice. The Falcon scholarship is an excellent opportunity if the AFA is really what your DD wants to do.
