About how many times could the average freshman go skiing during freshman year? I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth it to buy a ski pass (either the Academy one or a version of the Epic Pass).

I'd hold off. I know several freshmen who had quite a few opportunites to ski, but baseball will be your issue. Fall baseball will end in late October or early November, but assuming you go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, that knocks out several fall semester ski weekends. And you'll start back up with baseball in late January. Weekend passes are also squadron dependent.

what about for those not playing baseball? i did sports throughout high school but i think i'm going to stick to intramurals and try out snowboarding and join the skiing/snowboarding club

DS joined ski club (no tryouts) and went on several trips with club and also with friends. I think he went around 6-8 weekends over the entire season at least (gets a little busy/locked down during recognition). If you count 2 days per weekend this is 12-16 days of skiing/snowboarding, definitely worth a pass. Also, if you are in the ski club you can store your equipment in your room in addition to civvies for skiing (can't ski in ABUs).

This was definitely a nice way to relax during the year and get away from the hill.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that, if you're in ski club, it doesn't even requrie a pass to go skiing with the club. It counts as a school activity.

And, as for the baseball reference, I just happened to recall that SAshy was a recruited baseball player. And I assume he still plans to play. ;) However, like I mentioned, I know several freshmen (non-baseball players) who were able to ski quite a bit.

We got a ski pass for DS and he logged about 20 ski days during his freshman year, and no, a day or weekend pass from the Academy isn't needed. The pass also covered some of the Lake Tahoe area resorts, so he was able to ski up there during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. He'll be one of the firsties in charge of the Freestyle Ski team next year. He said the ability to get away to the mountains that first year was invaluable. As others have said, if you're an IC athlete, best to wait on purchasing a pass until you find out from the coach what your schedule will be. If not an athlete, by all means go for it. Keep in mind you'll still need to remain in good standing in your squadron, and always be mindful of studying to maintain grades.

I'm interested in doing the alpine race team (as a C4C.) I used to race in middle school but in high school I stopped racing and was a ski instructor. Does anyone know how competitive the team is? My race skills are probably a little rusty but I have maintained my ability to ski at a high level from my ski instruction position... Are there tryouts or how does that work?

Thanks for any insight!
