I am waitlisted for the AIM program and in the email they listed other opportunities that are available to those interested in going to the Academy. I was wondering which programs would be the best choice for me due to travel to Connecticut being quite far for me.
These were the options:
Cadet for a Day Event
Science, Technology and Engineering Program (STEP)
Sports Overnight Program
Genesis Invitational
Open House-
Academy Compass Event (Saturday's)
Admissions Briefing and Campus tour (Monday's & Friday's)*

I am an athlete, I swim competitively, so the Sports Overnight Program sounded interesting but I would like to hear other people's opinions.

Thank you!

Cadet Overnight (is this some same thing as Bean Sprouting CGA cadets/grads in the know?)

If it is, my "bean sprout" experience sealed the deal for me.

I would say however, if you are accepted as a college applicant, don't let "I'm not in CT" get in the way of going to experience it, and help you make a decision. I applied from Nashville, TN. I made a trip of it, staying at USMMA one night and USCGA the next. The experience did help me decide.

It's a moderate cost, but worth deciding if it's the right choice for you, and in the end, if it is, 4 free years of school more than makes up for it.

It's the same, however the term "beansproutting" is frowned upon by admissions for some reason.

We all still call it that in the barracks though...

We are on the waitlist for AIM as well. The letter said we would hear by June 1, which is tomorrow, so I guess it's not looking good. Has anyone from the waitlist been contacted or do they do all tomorrow?

The Cadet for a Day program might be worthwhile. When do they post the dates this program is available?

Cadet for a Day is open to those who did not attend AIM. It is not open to those who did attend AIM. I don't know if you had to apply to AIM to be condsidered, but that doesn't apply in your case. (The version in the Spring is only for those who have full or conditional appointments and excludes CGA Scholars).

DS applied but didn't make AIM. He did do Cadet for a Day and loved it. The two give very different views of the Academy. AIM gives a taste of Swab summer, but the only interaction with cadets is the cadre. CFD puts you in with cadets, both in Chase Hall and in classes. His preference when he applied to AIM was CFD, but he was pretty let down when he didn't make it. He was offered and accepted in the CGA Scholar program, and will be a Swab this summer.

Bear in mind that whatever program you are in, while you are checking out the Academy, the Academy is checking out you.:thumb:

I hope this helps.

I'm in touch with quite a few people who have been waitlisted for AIM and no one has heard a single thing yet. So I guess tomorrow is the day!

They're tried the get rid of it for awhile. Hey Admissions... "bean sprouting" aint going anywhere!

My DD did not go to AIM, did go to CFAD. She loved it! It gave her a real glimpse of what her 4 years there could be like, as opposed to just one summer (AIM). It was a trek for us - a 12 hour drive - but we were able to turn it into a long weekend with a fun visit with my old friend from college. Even if you don't have people in the area, there is always NY!

She was a recruited athlete, but I don't remember any mention of a Sports Overnight Program. Is it new? She did have the opportunity to meet with the coaches and work out with the team. The coach later said (to someone else, not DD) that her visiting really made an impression on him - in seeing her skills, demonstrated interest, and working with the rest of the team.

During her college search, she kept waiting to go onto a campus and just know that was the place she belonged. She started out her senior summer focused on USNA, but after staying there for a week-long program - she just felt it was okay. After CFAD - she got the feeling she was waiting for!

As LITS said, yes it is an effort and an expense. But compared to the scope and expense of what we are talking about, there should be no doubt about visiting!!

I'd actually like to hear the official position from Objee on why they are trying to get rid of it.

It's not even like it's offensive. It has a perfectly acceptable backstory for how the name came to being and everything.

From what I understood, they just wanted people to use the official name.... but no one ever did.

Okay, you've piqued my curiosity: What is beansproutting and how did it get its name?

DS will be dropping references like this all the time once he gets to CGAS in July, so I may as well start learning.

Thanks!

My daughter was called "Beanie" the whole time when she did the overnight. She liked it and stressed it was not said as a put down.

Beansprouting is where a non-cadet (High Schooler) visits the academy for the night and hangs out with cadets to see if they like the feel of the Academy. They are called beansprouts because if they accept an appointment they will come to the Academy and get their heads shaved to look like a bean.

Hence they are beansprouts before they come.

Also Bruce! Congratulations to you and your daughter... looks like you're getting a new son! :D

Then why don't they call them beans?

I just assumed "beansprout" referred to how new the candidates were to everything. They are literally just staring out, like a bean sprouting.

Because they won't look like beans til the summer.

So you can't be a bean til you've been a bean sprout... :p

Oh no, beansprouts are VERY popular. Always a chance to carry on if there's a beansprout around. I felt welcomes as a beansprout and welcomed beansprouts when I was a 4/c (although I never got one of my own. :frown:)
