In a matter of 24 hours: MS3 friend of DS travels to Texas for CTLT and discovers they are not expecting him or the other 19 cadets because the travel dates were wrong; DS informed that CULP is cancelled which was to begin 6/30. DS informed they are attempting to find another CULP spot for him. Lessons learned: have op orders and even then be ready for changes.

You indicated a while back that your son's CULP mission was to be in Jordan, which would have been a remarkable trip. Since that country shares a lengthy border with Syria, it's surprising that it took so long to cancel the mission. I hope they can fold his group into another trip. CULP can be a tremendous broadening experience.

Sounds like things are having the same issues several cadets had with CULP last year, they did a good job of trying to find replacement missions for those cadets, I hope it works out for your son.

It would be interesting to hear what they did with those 20 cadets that showed up for CTLT, did they find something for them or were they just sent back home.

Curious - how off were the dates?

Sent home

Sent them home on the next plane(s).

Sounds like they were trying to find other options but since they still needed to do LDAC not the easiest thing.

Possibilities

They just sent four choices so I hope he can secure one of those; first come first serve but competitive with three different continents as possibilities and 30-63 days with different missions. At least two weeks before the first one would leave.

Is there any reason you know of that a cadet would receive a stipend in the summer? MS3 said they were to receive summer stipend.

I have heard that as well. When my older son finished his MS3 year he received his stipend for June before leaving fo LDAC, he did not receive the stipend during LDAC but was paid for his time there. He left for CTLT the next day after LDAC and I do not beleive he was paid for CTLT or his stipend. To be honest it was a little confusing he said to figure out just what he was paid for. The money was deposited in his account and he just moved on. Stipend started again at the start of his MS4 year.

The whole pay thing over that summer can be a bit confusing.

63 days?, what kind of CULP mission is that one. Hope he is able to secure a spot.

Internship

Think that 63 days is an internship and not actually CULP but sounded like a great opportunity as well.

That does sound like a great opportunity, where is the internship located, what type of unit. That would pretty much take care of the whole "Summer job" question.

My son was supposed to have left today for CTLT in Texas. Two weeks ago he called his HR person at school because he still didn't have his flight into and found out that his trip was changed and he goes after his LDAC now.

This must have been a shock for the cadets

Hope your son get another CULP slot somewhere.

AFROTC Mom, so bear with me.

Doesn't AROTC cut orders for these cadets? Pay for the airline tickets??

I am a little confused how 20 cadets showed up and it was cancelled. Trust me when Bullet was ADAF, the adage was don't believe it until you in process and they say Welcome, XXX we were waiting for you. I get the mess up, but 20 cadets, seems a lot. Wouldn't that be multiple dets not getting the memo?

No flaming, just want to learn how the AROTC system works.

I don't think this type of thing involving a CTLT mess up is very common, first time I've heard of this happening. I'm sure someone somewhere did not have a good day when they had to explain this mix up.

When it comes to the CULP missions, most canellations are do to something going wrong in the host country. Not much the Army can do but go ahead with plans assuming the country is prepared. A few of the trips were cancelled or shortened last year due to problems the host country had with their own schedules.

Not an expert, but my understanding is that individuals receive operations orders and this is the key piece that tells you it's a go. DS said his MS3 friend had plane tickets purchased by the army but no operation orders which should've been a clue that something was not as it should be. How none of the 20 discovered this is interesting - guessing just to new to the process. So yes, it must've been a bit costly to send them home on the next plane. DS confirmed that it was his understanding that the issue was that someone miscounted the days from when they were assigned to LDAC.

Note: DS says that many of the cadets did get to stay in Texas and will complete their CTLT.

THX paradoxer.

When DS did his SFT training he had orders and tickets. That is why it was confusing to me. Heck, they even had a bus pick them up at the airport to take them to the base. They knew the names of the cadets(list) that were to board the bus.

Hence, it seemed odd to me, but I thought maybe this is the way the Army does it for AROTC cadets.

Thailand

Looks like the winner is Thailand and now leaves in 9 days. Interestingly, they gave DS four options to rank and in the end assigned option five to him :shake: Appears the entire group is reassigned to a new mission.
