So I know that July is the big month for potential cadets because they will open up a ton of stuff to us (or so I think due to email info), so what can I be doing now that will give me the best leg up on the competition? Also, how do I go about receiving nominations and what qualifies one for the Presidential nomination? Any info helps!!! (Some background info - my father served over 20 years and retired as a LTC - 0-5)
 
Go to the congressman and senator websites. Look under constituent services. Most now have a tab for service academies. I hear some require you to request an app packet. In our state, you just complete it off the Net and then mail in.

Deadlines are usually October. You need to figure out who you want for nomination references. It's different than the SA apps. They require math/English/science teachers. Noms references can be from coaches, pastors, etc. (at least in my area). Get it decided now and ask them so they have time to complete.
 
So what all is required for which nominations? im still confused on the references part.
 
It depends. You could probably complete th VP nom tonight. It's all online and requires only a short essay and some stats.

Simplified, congress/senators (each is maddeningly a little different)

1) Resume
2) 3-5 reference letters and/or forms
3) 2-4 short essays
4) passport picture
5) school transcript
6) official copy of SAT/ACT scores
7) some kind of overall application where you list your activities
 
I thought you had to complete the first part of the application for west point to move on to the nominations?

Please look at all of the stickies at the top of the USMA section. Buff81 has everything broken down there and there is a timeline as well.
 
The application, nomination, and medical processes are concurrent/non-linear. While they don't all start at exactly the same time, you will likely have to manage multiple processes at the same time. Those that work perfectly linearly will likely be disappointed when they miss deadlines and fail to get 3Q with a nomination.

So what can I be doing now, If i am about to be a senior? What all can I goo ahead and get done so I can be that much better than the rest?
 
Send your official transcripts to West Point, sign up for the first tests for the fall (and send official test scores to West Point if you haven't), start training for the CFA, develop a good résumé, start making yourself knowledgeable about the Army, what an officer does, what branch most interests you and why, read the Long Grey Line and/or Absolutely American, contact your Field Force rep and introduce yourself. If this is something you want, you should know everything you can about it and why. The above will set you on the right path to be successful for the application and the nomination process.

You're not getting a leg up on anyone because so many people are doing the same thing, probably with a little more knowledge on it than you. If you don't have anything to do this summer get a job (volunteer or paid) and work on your nomination applications and WP application. I'm willing to bet you are done with school, if you haven't told your teachers about the SOEs they might be a little surprised and/or angry. Send your transcripts, get a good CFA score, etc.

Talk to your FFR if you really have no idea what you're doing, they'll set you straight.

I keep hearing about FFR's and MOC's and so on and so forth... who are they, how do I find their contact info, and what do I need to communicate to them?

Woah woah woah.. I'm just now going into my senior year... I can't get a job because I have a busy football training schedule. Also, what is an SOE?

That's fine then. An SOE kind of like a letter of recommendation but your teacher fills it out online.

cadet85, have you thoroughly read everything on West Point's official Admissions webpage? Go to the Admissions page http://www.usma.edu/admissions/SitePages/Home.aspx and go through every page and section carefully. There is a link where you can contact Admissions and find out who your Field Force Representative is. West Point has everything laid out for you there.

There is also a ton of information available in the stickies at the top of the USMA section of the forum. There are explanations for many of the acronyms you see used here. Make use of the resources that are available to you. Folks on the forum are much more willing to assist if they feel like you have already done a lot of careful, thorough research on your own.
