Hi, I will be starting ROTC my sophomore year in the fall. (I was unable to do it my freshman year because my schedule just didn't allow me too) and I just had a question about Field Training.

I'm currently a Nursing major with a 3.7 GPA and looking at the PT scores, I max out on push ups- and sit ups and can run the 1.5mile in about 8:50. My question is, what exactly goes into being selected for field training? I know that I'm at a disadvantage since I would only be in the program for a year, vs everyone who has been in the program for two, but am I still competitive enough for a slot? About how many are typical selected each summer?

The things that are included in your package are grades, pfa score, commanders ranking, and sat or afoqt score. I think that is all that is included. Your stats look very competitive. Maxing/getting a high score on the PFA is very helpful and will make you look good for your commanders ranking. You have a high gpa which will also look good. The only thing that may being you down is having a low SAT score, but your gpa and pfa will help counteract that. Being a nursing major helps you a lot because they usually have a really high selection for field training. The selection rate for field training for the past 2 years was 92-93% so you have a really good shot at getting picked up for field training.

If I'm not mistaken, specifically regarding commander's ranking - I believe that is worth 50% of your package. So, you are at a slight disadvantage compared to incoming AS200 cadets who previously did 1 year of AFROTC - in which the Detachment commander already knows these cadets.

That slight disadvantage can be made up quickly. Of the cadets my det sent to FT this year, about half were 250s that had just come in that year. Several of our top cadets were 250s. And As your gpa is very high, you have a very good chance so long as you show your deticated, make sure to step up when leadership roles present themselves, and maintain a solid GPA.

First Impressions!! :thumb:

Thank you guys for your help! I was just a little worried when I started browsing through the threads here, and figured it would be best if I just asked. I'm excited to start ROTC and will for sure take leadership opportunities if they arise! :thumb:

Sorry for the late reply! May I ask why my ace in the hole is nursing? Just curious.

Because the Air Force is hurting for nurses. The selection rate for nurses has been very high lately.

Hi guys! I just had another question. I noticed some talk about In-College scholarships, but I'm confused about how the process works. Is that just automatic, and is that something you find out about during the fall or the spring? Or is there somewhere I need to go to apply for the in college scholarships?

For in college scholarships you need to speak to your cadre. They will have the answers for you.

I agree because for an ICSP the det will be involved in the process. Typically there are 2 boards a yr., if I recall correctly one is in the fall, and one is in the spring, but each board has more emphasis on a yr group when it comes to the ratio.

I.E. I believe the fall gives more sophs. compared to fresh, and the spring gives more fresh compared to sophs.

I am sure somebody here will correct me if I am wrong.

One thing to understand about the ICSP, is that there is a limited pot of money for AFROTC scholarship per commissioning yr group. 3 yrs ago, due to the fact that for that yr group (I think class of 14) so many took the HSSP, and budget constraints, they had no ICSP board that one yr. No national ICSP awarded. The cadres typically also offer ICSP for their det., thus another option is the det. scholarship, and only the det. can give you the details.
