Hello All,

I'm in the middle of finishing my NROTC scholarship application and had a few questions. First of all, does anyone know if NROTC superscores ACT/SAT scores? I have read through the application checklist and it seems like scores are superscored for Navy option, but not for Marine option.

Secondly, I'm still deciding between Navy and Marine option, but does anyone have more information about the LREC program besides the brief paragraph on the NROTC website. I tried to find more information about the program through Google but couldn't seem to find much.

You are correct that Marine Option will not superscore.
The SAT math and critical reading scores must be from the same and most recent test. Applicants cannot combine their best math and critical reading scores from the SAT to achieve the qualifying score for application. (Marine Corps Option only).

Another difference is that Navy will care about your major and will award 85% of scholarships to tech (Tier 1 & 2) majors. The Marine Corps won't care what your major is. Also, Marine Corps will administer the PFT and you had better perform well on it. There is no physical fitness test to get the Navy scholarship but you will need to pass the PFA at school before the benefits kick in. Of course the key thing in making a decision is simply which service you want to serve in. They are very, very different.

Unfortunately I can't address you other questions. Hopefully someone else on here will chime in.
 
Thanks, kinnem! Also, other than the PFT for the Marines and choice of majors for Navy, do the Marine and Navy boards look at portions of the application differently? i.e. One service puts more weight on demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities or officer interviews?

I really couldn't tell you but they may. I do know that the Marine Corps puts an emphasis on leadership in the sense that they expect everyone, including enlisted, to demonstrate leadership. So i wouldn't be surprised if there is more emphasis on leadership in the application but that's just guesswork on my part. Navy will certainly have more of an emphasis on academics in comparison to the Marine Corps since there is a definite need for technical skills at sea. Navy will require you to take two semesters of Calculus and Calculus based physics... so if those topics are of no interest to you (they certainly weren't to my DS) that might help to make a decision for you.

What you really need to look at is what do you want to do. Check out the Navy websites and take a look at the jobs available in the Corps and in the Fleet. Keep in mind that even as a Marine you might spend a fair amount of time aboard ship as part of an MEU, so you can't use that aspect alone to make a determination. DS is currently on a summer cruise aboard the USS Ashland so he is getting a first taste of that now.
 
My daughter is at a midwestern state university with a NROTC scholarship for LREC. She has completed her freshman year of college.
The competition for LREC is very intense. 85% of NROTC scholarships are distributed to engineering and tech majors who comprise Tier 1 and Tier 2. LREC majors come from Tier 3 and are less than 15% of the total scholarships awarded.

Other than her major - everything else is just like normal for any NROTC midshipman. Calculus,physics, military history, PT, Lab, cleaning the stadium on Sunday mornings after home football games,etc. She would not normally have to take Calc or Physics for her major so that does add to the course load.

She was the 1st LREC person in her unit, and her advisor was helpful as they both figured it out at the same time. The advisor has since moved on to another posting.
