I'm going into my sophomore year of high school, I'm in an IB program, my weighted GPA is a 4.5, I took an ACT a few years ago (scored a 24).
I play varsity softball for my school, and am on two competitive summer teams. I coach a Little League softball team, help lead a local Girl Scout troop, and volunteer for Hospice.

Is there anything I can do to better my chances of being accepted into the Academy when I apply?

Any response is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rebekah

Well, being on the Varsity softball team as a freshman is great. Keep up the volunteer hours. Try to achieve additional leadership positions in the activities you are involved in. Being a team captain as a junior in softball would be great (being captain your senior year would be too late as the application closes in February of your senior year). Also, the average ACT score of recent appointees was 30. You could try to raise your ACT scores by getting a practice ACT book or taking an ACT prep class. Best wishes. :thumb:

If you are looking for a check-list of things to accomplish to receive an appointment, there isn't one. All you can do is "YOUR BEST". If your best is "BETTER" than those you are competing for for a nomination and thus on your MOC's slate of names, then you have a really good chance. If you aren't, then you have to compete against all the others nationally.

Here is a link to the profile for the class of 2016. This is last year's appointees. It shows the class average gpa, sat, ACT, extra curricular, etc...

Honestly thought, I've never liked hearing a person wanting to know what scores and such they think they "NEED". That implies that they'll only try enough to make it. In my opinion, it's actually quite simple.

1. GPA GOAL - 4.0 unweighted
2. ACT GOAL - 36 in all areas
3. SAT GOAL - 2400 (800 in all areas)
4. CLASS RANK - #1
5. Leadership - President or captain of all activities you are part of
6. Athletics - 2-3 years of starting varsity

etc......

I'm not saying you have to reach these goals. Only saying, that SHOULD be you goal. NOT because of the academy. NOT so you can get into Harvard. It should be your goal because you should ALWAYS try to do your BEST.

"If you don't have time to do it right; when will you have time to do it over again?"

Best of luck.
