Weird question for the evening

I have a son that attended USAFA so when his little brother went to camp in COS a few weeks ago he told him "leave candy in the back of the drawers" for the Basic Cadets. (apparently my son has a fond memory of finding and eating laffy taffy, but so afraid his Cadre would find the wrapper - he ate the wrapper too:yllol:) and people throw hamburgers and candy to Basics on the 4Th of July at USAFA. Now his younger brother will be at the Naval Academy over the 4th. Anything he can do? Obviously he will have no contact with the new Midshipmen but if he can leave just one smiling he would.

Is he on summer seminar or attending as a midshipman? If I recall, the 4th of July for mids consisted of extra PT because of the holiday, followed by more PT! It depends on what company your in. All the mids are shuffled onto the practice football field at some stage during the evening for about 20min to watch the fireworks.

During parades/march-ons for football games throughout the year, people will sometimes throw candy at the mids. Again, depending on what company your in, most mids are told not to accept or pick up any candy thrown at them.

I'm not sure how helpful he can be. They will either have an inspection before he leaves ensuring all the rooms are empty, have no vandalism and are good to go, or have some mids go through room to room after the sports camp.

I didn't go through the sports camps but I have heard of stories such as yours happening before.

Son #2 is just there for a sports camp.

My DD was there for a sports camp over the last Forth of July! She didn't mention anything about people leaving treats for the mids, but let your son know that the mids may have inadvertently left treats for him!

The day after she returned home from camp she was wearing a USNA cap. Since she doesn't usually wear caps, I mentioned I was surprised she bought it. She said she didn't buy it, she found it. She and her roommates lifted the tiles in the ceiling and found all kids of stuff! She got the hat, another found a t-shirt. They also found a bicycle and a Christmas tree but couldn't figure out how to get them home. LOL!

It's my understanding mids sometimes leave gear and contraband up there.

My recollection from 3 years ago is that the Plebes also get an ice cream treat when they're allowed out to watch the fire works. This brief respite from the Plebe Summer grind will be a distant memory when they're rudely awakened at 5:30 Friday morning for PEP. Usually no candy or food of any type is left in the rooms lest the mice get to it. There is a notorious mouse problem at Bancroft Hall, so all the Mids usually keep food locked up tight in plastic containers.

All the plebes are in the rooms they will be in for the remainder of the summer. No way that you could leave anything for the Plebes now. And yes, mids leave all sorts of things in the ceilings. Summer storage is not always the easiest thing, and many mids leave things in the ceilings either to get it out of sight or with the intention of retrieving it in the Fall (unless you change companies, you'll be in the same general area year to year).

In regards to the ice cream during fireworks, I don't remember any. Everything was a little more laid back during the fireworks for us and the detailers all relaxed a bit, only to lock it back on once we got back to the hall. One word of caution in regard to food consumption, at the baseball game later in the summer the plebes are allowed to get whatever they want at the concessions. There were plebes who gorged themselves on junk, and trust me they regretted it the next morning at PEP.

Yes he was at USAFA prior to the BCs arriving and we knew he was staying on a BC floor- so he left candy. Maybe USAFA lives up to its Zoo nickname with the public being present at 4th of July celebration- hence the tradition of throwing food to the new animals.:shake: I told him not to leave anything at this camp.

Not cool...when I was a Midn, we used the area above the ceiling tiles for (unauthorized ) summer storage. We felt we could trust other midn not to steal. I guess we weren't used to having outsiders in our company spaces during the summer.

I mentioned that earlier but my comment was ignored.
