I was wondering how cadets intending on joining the reserve component get their assignment? Is there some sort of database with open reserve 2LT slots they have to apply to?

Just curious, is this "job board" available to the public to view online? Or is it only available to cadets and battalions to view.

It is definitely not public nor do battalions have access unless they are some liaison or something, it will be presented to you in the form of an excel document after accessions. I have a copy of it in my AKO (FY2012) but for security reasons I can't share it. You will not find a public list of reserve slots online but I can tell you AV, MI, and MS are about as competitive as AD. You will see a lot of CM, QM, OD and TC slots on the list and it is broken down by state.

Best plan of action is to seek out units first so 2LT (or 1LT which a 2LT can jump into) slots are not taken.

Thanks, I am mostly interested in the Corps of Engineers, Military Intelligence, and Signal Corps. Are there a decent number of slots for those?

Also, how do I make myself more competitive for a reserve slot since it is not based on the OML. Is it based on GPA, internship experience(s), APFT, etc. ? Is it pretty much like applying for a regular civilian job (resume + interview)?

If you didn't lock down a USAR slot at LDAC, you can still get a vacancy hold from a local unit.

The easiest way to do this is to get on the HRC website (hrc.army.mil) and login to the user portal. If you are a progression cadet and don't have an HRC portal access, have one of your prior service cadets or one of your cadre use theirs. Once logged in, there will be several options to click - click the button called "Tools" and in the subsequent menu, there is a tool that can find vacancies.

Using that tool in the HRC portal, you can search by MOS code, state and grade. They'll even give you the unit name, the POC # for their personnel section and the paragraph and line number of the position. Just FYI, if you're looking for a position, look for the 1LT positions. The USAR doesn't tend to have 2LT slots, mostly because they have greater rank flexibility with 1LT slots. You will be able to take any of the 1LT slots in USAR as a 2LT.

can you first try to get the AD Branch you want... say Medical Service, and then if you don't get that in November of MSIV year, immediately try to switch over to Reserves?

Good point Khergan I forgot about that tool, but as you said not just any cadet can access it and I there sometimes old info on there. I always look for 1LT or even CPT slots when I check.
