Hello everyone!
I've visited the site a lot before to answer my questions about applying to the academies, but I decided to join so I could ask questions better tailored for me. I'm a prospective for 2018, and am leaning towards USNA because I really want to get into aviation. I live the Chicagoland area and go to a newer school (2006) that already has a history of sending kids to service academies. This year's graduation class sent one of our star football players to the AFA to play football, while the year before that sent one of our star volleyball players and NHS president to USMA. Hoping I can be the first to get into Naval. If anyone is willing, maybe they can figure out how I stack up against the competition? I have decent grades, around a 4.25 weighted and a 3.7 unweighted, with 4 AP classes on the books and another 4 that I'm taking this upcoming year, along with honors in every class that is was offered. I got a 30 composite on my ACT, 31 super-score, sub-scores of a 30 in math, 33 in English and reading, and a 27 in science. As far as extra-curriculars go, I'm in NHS, on JV soccer, play club soccer with Chicago Kickers, varsity girl's swimming since I was a freshman and also do USA swim with a club. I'm president of Key Club, which is a community service club affiliated with Kiwanis, and volunteer at my church. Thanks for any responses in advance, even if it doesn't seem like much, it really helps with the nervousness to talk to someone about it!

Your test scores are good, unweighted GPA and leadership could use a little nourishment though, but it's not unimpressive by any means. Just get started on your application as soon as possible and impress your congressman.

Not entirely sure I agree with FMB. If you're Key Club is active, that's a definite plus and something you should emphasize. Nevertheless, if you can add a team captain spot on soccer or swimming that would be another plus. Of course the higher the GPA the better as well. Just my opinion, and I don't sit on the boards, but you look like a strong candidate to me. But it's important to continue to try to improve in every area. Also, make sure you're prepared for the CFA, work hard at pursuing nominations, etc. etc.

Looks good! Just keep trying to do your best in every area:thumb:

I'm curious as to why you are not considering USAFA if you are interested in aviation.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone! About the unweighted GPA, I know it's not the best. I didn't think about pursuing the Academies seriously until the end of my sophomore year, so that might be to blame a little. kinnem, our key club actually just started up last year, I was the first president. We did a lot of activities, and since it was student-lead, we could choose the service projects we did. I think we ended up having 5 all year, plus other ongoing service things like can collections and student ambassadors. As far as team captains go, I don't think it's really a possibility unfortunately. I'm not naturally athletically gifted, and while I try really hard and am a decent player, there are girls on both my soccer and swim teams who out-play/swim me, so they have the captain's spot. I did receive most improved in soccer though, and am a camp-councilor. I hope those will be enough to get me in. Tigger, I'm not very interest in USAFA not really by choice, but because I didn't get accepted into their summer seminar, and have not seen received the status of candidate which is really confusing to me, since the Navy and Army have been very responsive to me. I also really like the atmosphere and tradition of both the Navy and the Army, and also an engineering degree at the Navy holds a lot of clout, while any degree from West Point is a really good deal. I have my interview with my BGO for Navy on Thursday, so hoping that goes well. I'll keep you all posted, and thanks again!

I'm partial to Navy myself, but I wouldn't rule out AFA just because you didn't get accepted to their summer seminar. Summer seminars are harder to get into than the academy itself. That being said, follow your heart, but be willing to take a second look.

Agreed! Also, I have seen on other threads that the USAFA application isn't open yet.

Good luck:thumb:
