When do the basic cadets return from Jack's Valley and what do they do between return and A-Day? What happens after A-day and when do they start their academic year?

JV is only about 2 weeks this year. The Wing returns on Aug 3rd, there is the acceptance ceremony, the Doolies will move to their academic year squadrons (lots of shuffling around as they move to new rooms and dorms). Aug 5 -7, there is alot of logistical activity, getting their laptop, finalizing their schedules, getting familiar with the academic facilities, etc. Busy time getting ready for the school year. School starts up on Aug 8th and the rollercoaster ride continues. :)

Do they change new rooms and dorms after BCT?
And after that, they change again after the first semaster?
Thanks for the info.

Yes. They go from the rooms they are in during BCT to their academic year squadron. After first semester depends on the squadron. Some may keep the same room and roommates for the full year. Some may move rooms if squadron leadership decides to change the dynamic by swapping roommates.

Yes, the newly accepted C4C's will room with 1 or 2 other C4C's of the same sex in the area of the dorm that their academic squadron is assigned. Lowered numbered squads (1-23) tend to be in Vandenberg Hall while the higher number squads are in Sijan Hall (24-40). I say "tend" because Vandy has been under construction and therefore some Vandy squads have been temporarily moved to Sijan.

Thanks falconfamily, buffalo and Blackbird!

I didn't know this information.
My DS Squad will be CS03(He is now at Aggressors C).
Vandenberg is newer dorm? better than Sijan?
It really doesn't matter at this time:smile:, but I'm just curious.
Thanks again,

Delta

Do the cadets get to choose their own roommates for the school year? Assuming they do, I also assume that most would choose someone from their Basic squadron. Are the academic squadrons the same as those in Basic or are they reassigned to a new squadron? If they are reassigned, how is the roommate selection handled?

Depends on the squadron... Some squadrons will let basics choose, some will assign them. If they are assigned, it will either be random or cadre will select. BCT flights (five flights = 1 BCT squadron this year) move together into the same academic year squadron.

Choice of roommates is like most things at Usafa, it varies by squadron. Sme can choose, others not. It will always be with members of their squadron. Many will be 3 to a room, some may be 2. They usually change second semester and may choose at this point defiant on squadron

The only thing that really changed is they have the 3rd week replaced with the first week or the schedule is reversed from last year. It is still the same basic time at Jacks.

Roommate selections/assignments are Squadron specific and to some degree gender specific. There are fewer women in each squadron than men -- there are fewer ways to "shuffle" the 4C females than there may be to "shuffle" the 4C males. When my daughter was a 4C -- the 6 - 4C females were asked at the end of Jack's how they would like to be assigned for the fall semester. In that situation, the girls' request for assignments was followed as leadership felt the girls' arrangement made sense. The girls were assigned, as is typical, for 4C fall semester to 3 girls per room X 2 rooms. The girls were asked again toward the end of fall semester how they would like to be assigned for the spring. They requested to stay in their fall assignments, which was allowed. That year and that squadron the guys tended to be "shuffled" more than the girls. Of course, the girls might have experienced a different manner of assignment if one of them had dropped out/left the Academy during the academic year. In their case, all 6 made it through and all 6 graduated in May!

I understand that it varies by squadron - and maybe that's the answer - but would it be expected that roommates during Basic would continue into the academic year?

Basic room mates do not necessarily remain Academic year room mates. Again, it is by squadron and by gender -- some squadrons allow Basics to express a preference, some do not. Most, I understand, will listen to how room mates got along during Basic and take that into consideration, if possible. But there are only so many guy rooms and so many girl rooms -- also status as IC athletes plays some role in room assignments.

Academic Squads

If I understand this correctly, from previous posts, the basic cadets my DD is currently with in her BCT squad (smaller group of 28) will be in her academic squad?

That "smaller group of 28" within her BCT squad is referred to as a Flight. There are a total of 40 flights in BCT. Each flight will move in its entirety to one of the 40 academic squadrons and will become the C4Cs for that academic squadron.

why does that matter, just curious.

Sometimes IC athletes are roomed together due to their practice and travel schedules.

After the first semester, most C4C will change their room again. Or they'll change roommates.

As for the IC's that's not necessarily true. My son played on the football team and neither first or second semester did he have another football player as a roommate. Matter of fact, his roommates weren't IC's at all.

After C4C year, it's a whole different world. A lot of times people can choose their roommates. Depending on the squadron.

when we were at I-Day, we were told that the cadets stay in the same squadron the first 2 years then switch again after that. can you request to switch to a different squadron?

Your squadron is your family...would you request to switch to a different family? You will move up the chain of command within your squadron until senior year when you and your classmates run the squadron...it is a nice feeling.

I don't have any current intel, but in the past the only squadron switches were due to 'issues'...or perhaps the squadron sizes are out of whack and they need to balance them...needs of the AF.
