Dodmerb---really?

I had my Dodmerb physical yesterday. What a joke! The entire physical lasted 15 mins. Typical vitals, pee in a cup, and he listed to my heart. I had thought there would be MUCH more than this. This guy didnt even have me take my shirt, shoes or socks off! Really? This was a DOD Physical? I had shoulder surgery and he didnt even change range of motion or anything. I could have had six toes and he wouldnt have caught it. I guess that's good for me because I know I am in great physical health, but I was thinking it was much more thorough from what I read. I guess this guy must be an exception to the norm....at least I would hope so for our military's sake.

I caution you not to take this lightly. There have been other candidates on the forum here, who thought they were physically ready to go, but were not. They had to see if they could get a waiver and could not or did not. And there were those that received waivers.

Surprising that the examination was as cursory as you describe, particularly if the doctor was DODMERB-qualified. Did he mention a tee time? After all, it was Wednesday.

However, as long as your six toes do not "prevent the proper wearing of military footwear or impair walking, marching, running, or jumping" they are probably good to go.

My son had a similar cursory exam a couple of years ago. He did have a couple of remedials but they were a result of boxes checked on the form you fill out.

The low bidder Dr. in an area gets the contract.
 
DS's physical was pretty light too. Didn't measure flexibility or any range of motion items. His high school athletic physical was more thorough. They did check his hearing and had a remedial for wax removal.
 
I guess the downside of taking the phyiscal in Colorado Springs (very near DoDMERB HQ) was DS had a very comprehensive exam, including the dreaded "turn your head and cough" by a female MD :eek:. The entire exam lasted a good 40-45 minutes.
 
sheriff, you might be correct. It may be living near a military base. We lived where SJAFB is located, and our DS's was @45 mins, and he did the turn and cough too.

Plus, at least for AFROTC, if you go rated, your rising 400 yr., they will fly you out to WPAFB for a 3 day flight physical. Non-rated get the 45 min exam prior to commissioning. DoDMERB will be in your life for a long time.
 
Wait until you get to be my age. The physicals (given by female nurse practitioners for the most part) get more 'thorough' and far more 'up close', personal and 'intimate.' Why I believe the latex glove I glimpsed last time went all the way up to the elbow!
Be sure to mention that if they find your dignity up there, to please give it back.
 
Hopeful -- you should be hopeful that the doctor was less cursory in filling out the required forms. If he wasn't, then you're far from done with DODMERB.

sheriff -- was the MD qualified and licensed? If so, then her gender is irrelevant. The sooner your DS figures that out, the better.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but budget constraints might have changed the requirement to go to Wright-Pat. All of my DD friends that went rated were on their way to WPAFB for their physicals until somebody decided it was easier to let them drive themselves to McGuire in New Jersey. Now they're all graduated, commissioned and sitting around waiting for their report dates.

Gender was relevant to my 17 year old DS who was uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed with the unexpected situation.

I am somewhat confused by your statement but I think I can guess where you might be going. Let me put the brakes on it before it spirals out of control. Please note on my post I said MD so of course I believe her to qualified and licensed. My use of this icon :eek: was to illustrate my 17 yr old DS embarrassment at having his testicles examined by an unfamiliar MD who happened to be a female. Please do not make this into a gender discussion. The point of my post was to let folks know they may in for a very detailed medical exam and it may be performed by a member of the opposite sex.

I'm curious. Would you use the same "shocked" icon if your daughter was being examined by a male gynecologist?

:thumb: Considering the majority of the time, my wife and daughter's doctor was a male.
 
And the spiral begins.... Sorry folks I am at a loss as to how to make my orginal post and point any clearer. I guess I should have used this icon :redface: and all would be good with the world???

Nope. Everyone in my class that needed a FC1 went to Wright-Patt and I'm scheduled to go there in March for my FC1 physical.

Holy cow! It was his son that was shocked/embarrassed.

Most of us that are older may find it a little humorous but understandable that a 17 year old male was uncomfortable.

Reaper is correct, at our DS's det. they didn't cancel the WPAFB flight physical. There are 2 other AFROTC 14 posters here besides Reaper that went in the month of June to WPAFB.

The graduates sitting around is not uncommon. AFROTC May grads are lucky to go casual status in Aug, and start UPT in Mar.

Back on topic, don't assume that a 15 min DoDMERB is common, and don't assume that you are clear to go for commissioning. You will have one more prior to commissioning no matter what career field.
 
I think the cursory medical exam happens more then you think.

My older son's seem to take the normal amount of time for a complete physical.

Now...My younger son's was quite different. The clinic he went to had schedule City worker drug tests for the same day, the waiting room was bustling, some with worried faces which we found amusing. When the nurse called his name I stepped out to the lobby to get coffee, the line was not too long, by the time I was paying for the coffee my son tapped me on the shoulder and said he was done. I couldn't believe how quick it was.

Luckily I asked if they had done the hearing test, they had forgot, so back in we went to argue with the front desk that he needed the hearing test. After calling the head nurse out they finally realized that he needed the test. The hearing test took more the twice the time the entire physical took.

At least they were on top of the paper work they sent to Dodmerb, son was qualified in about 2 weeks.
