So I am getting ready to apply for the National ROTC scholarship and am trying to see where I am at. I know these two events (push up, sit ups) are timed 1 minute each and the run is a timed one mile. Does anybody know of a table where I can see how many points I get after I try it out? Thanks!

At this point the APFT calculator is not what you need to be looking at. You won't need to worry about the standards for the APFT until you are offered a scholarship or enrolled in Army ROTC. At this point you want to be able to do as many pushups and CURLUPS as you can in a minute, and run 1 mile as fast as you can. If you aren't doing 40 pushups, 50 curlups, and running an mile in the 6-7 minute range you need to work on improving your scores. Keep in mind that the fitness assessment plays a very small role in your overall score. There are plenty of other things more important to lose sleep over than the PFT.

The APFT Calculator will just confuse the situation in regard to the PFT.

Follow Clarkson advice and try and shoot for the numbers he mentioned.

Also, read through Clarkson's Blog, it is a wealth of information from one of the best sources you'll find on this board for ROTC and Scholarship information.

Sorry, I gave you bad advice

I read your post too quickly and did not see that you are applying for scholarship. DS is leaving for college and taking AFPT in 2 weeks so that is what I was focused on. Clarkson is spot on. AFPT is not of concernt right now.

If you want to get an idea of where you stack up, go back and look at prior threads that were going around after each board. Several scholarship winners posted their PFT stats.

Or you can turn off the computer, do 50 pushups, 70 curlups, and go run. Better use of your time.

son JUST sent his PFA in-(and now we just read your post) and he had 82 pushups, 5.28 mile, but only 66 curl ups (the coach was a stickler for form) should he have waited until he brought up the curl-ups?

82 push-ups in one minute? I wonder how many he might have done if he had been using both hands.

I also thought the 82 was high but the coach said he counted accurately.

he is a boxer (and wrestler and hockey but boxing is his #1 sport)

boxing=pushup training (two hands were used)

He thought he'd do better on the curl ups though but I think he practiced the wrong form. -just wondering if he should have retested before sending it in...

Believe me, these results are probably just fine!

+1 EDelahanty!

I know for AFA the max points are: 85 push ups in 2 minutes, 95 sit ups in 2 mins.. If they are doing the correct form, and hitting 82 in one minute, hats off to you!

Trust me Pima and edelanty, I follow these boards religiously (hopefulley not next yr though as i wont have a highschool senior) and I was also quizzical(for lack of a better word) about that push up score and did point it out. Wasn't sure what to do with it (or the lower curl up score). I've seen him do that many push-ups but I can't judge form. I've seen him do more curl ups too though.

Maybe he should have redone it with a different coach.

Uggghh I hate all my second guessing with these applications...

Just relax, Vista123, or you'll make yourself nuts. The 82/5:28/66 result was terrific and confirms to the scholarship board that he is fit.

Personally, I'm not wild about the boxing, though, having boxed at the local Boys' Club in high school. My neurologist has dibs on my cauliflower once I'm done with it.

JMPO and 0.019843 cents....submit it, they are great scores. The coach was in charge of it, and are verifying the scores.

I would at the same time spend this yr. to make sure it is the correct form. Every fall there are threads regarding scholarship recipients busting the PFA the 1st week.

I am confused regarding the pushup form. On the scholarship aplication it refers to the President's physical fitness test where arms must be at shoulder width and done to an audio tape. From my understanding APFT is " ASSUME THE FRONT-LEANING REST POSITION BY PLACING YOUR HANDS WHERE THEY ARE COMFORTABLE FOR YOU". Aren't these two completely styles of pushups? In one minute I tend to get 65ish pushups with a wider pushup style and only 45ish with shoulder width. I also thought that the test was the number of correct pushups in one minute, how can this be done to an audio tape?

You will do the PFT for the scholarship, not the APFT. Once you've won a scholarship you will do the APFT thereafter. Go figure.

Petry - the form we copied just says hands under shoulders, it does not say anything about an audio tape. But I guess that doesn't help you out with putting your hands further apart.

The President's Fitness Test (the one done in gym classes) uses the audio tape for both the pushups and curlups. From what I've read you can just send in these scores in lieu of the Army Scholarship PFT, correct me if i'm wrong. What are the penalties for performing sub-par on the first AFPT if awarded a scholarship? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep everything streamlined and mandate that all scholarship candidates meet with an Army representative to ensure that their form and physical fitness is up to snuff? Just my two cents.
