Ya'll are probably starting to think I have way too much free time this summer :D However, I did stumble upon this and it definitely looked interesting enough to post:

Functional Area 40: Army Space Operations Officer

I'm aware of Air Force space and missile officers, but what does the Army breed do?

I've only met two so far. I was completing some acquisition training at Redstone Arsenal.

Are they full-time Space Operations Officers, or is it a qualification that you earn, then return to your previous duties, similar to the Parachutist badge?

FA40's are full-time. You initially branch something else. After a few years you can apply for FAs. MILPER messages usually advertise for certain year groups.

You have to complete five static-line jumps from orbit to earn the badge.
 
There is a Space Ranger here at USMA, one of very few officers with both a Ranger Tab and Space wings :thumb:
 
Well, I stand corrected... I was certain at they would be called 'space cadets.' ;-)
On a serious note, they appear to be the folks that operate/coordinate satellite signals and imagery for the benefit of the Army. I'm sure there is more to it, but one must know the secret handshake.
 
Seems like if you want to be "space" anything, you should go to space! :biggrin:

I went to an observatory in MD.... shouldn't I get a space medal too!

First you need to 'take up space' in the military....
 
I had a space badge in the Air Force since space/missile ops was a single career field (I understand that this has changed or is changing). As a missile guy, though, my main identifier was the "pocket rocket" (pure space dudes did not get to wear it). We actually had "rockets," but if we shot them off it would be a bad day for humanity.
