While I was looking at my MOC's website today I peeked at last year's nominations. He had nominated three or four candidates for both the USMA and USAFA, as well as two for the USMMA. However, I was surprised to see that not one USNA nomination was given out. I am a junior in high school who is applying to all of the summer seminar programs. The USAFA and USNA are my top two choices. I am from Illinois which is definitely not close to any major ocean. Would it be wise for me to pursue a USNA nomination over a USAFA one? I also just looked at my neighboring congressman's website. He too did not nominate a USNA candidate. Any suggestions?

He might not've nominated anyone to USNA because noone applied for a nomination there. Apply for what you want. If you would like to go to air force or naval, then apply for both. It won't hurt your chances. You may be required to put your order of preference on the application but that's just something you have to decide.
Best of luck,
Steven

I checked on the application form while I was there just so I could start preparing. You are required to state your order of preference.

That's what I figured. Go ahead and apply for both. All of the academies are great schools with great military programs and most importantly all of them give you a chance to serve your country as an officer.

Thanks, I have a whole year to perfect the application. Nothing like getting a head start right? Just praying for a few summer seminar acceptances. Will at least make me feel good about myself! :D

Hi all!

I am the AF "advisor" to my MOC and I chair his USAFA nomination panel.

This year my MOC had no openings at USNA. So we didn't interview anyone for that.

Remember...MOC's are only allowed to have 5 people "credited" to them at any academy. Mine has 5 at USNA right now and nobody graduating next year, hence the "no openings." That may be what you had.

ALWAYS APPLY for that which you want...and be open about why.

I interviewed one of my OWN candidates (I'm an ALO) and he looked us in the eye and said:"Given a choice, I'd accept USMA over USAFA at this time."

I still rated him very high for USAFA...he's a great candidate and we'd be lucky to get him. Kudo's to him for being honest to us on the board!

I have contacted my ALO today about an interview for summer seminar. I was not sure if it was needed as I have read on here that you do not; however, on the USAFA summer seminar application it says to contact him. As for the nominations, a lot is yet to be decided. From what I am able to gather on both websites and my interests, the USAFA is my top choice. My main reason is my motivation to be a pilot(ever since I saw Top Gun :D) and the chance at representing a different branch than the rest of my family.

Thanks for the help Steve.

GOOD JOB!

You are correct; it's NOT "required" to contact your ALO about the summer seminar.

BUT...

We really like to hear from folks that are interested! It gives us a name, a face, etc...etc...and we start to get to know you. Then we're ready to start helping you; we'll know who you are, etc.

It's a GOOD thing!!!
