I was just wondering if you could still receive an appointment to the Academy if you do not reveive a nomination, or will you just receive a LOA? Thanks.

No. You cannot recieve an appointment without a nomination. From what I understand a nomination gives USMA the legal authority to accept you into their academy. Even if you get a LOA, you still have to get a nomination and be medically cleared in order to finally recieve an appointment.

Also, beginning last year they really stopped giving out a lot of LOA's, and I expect by the time you apply they will give out almost none. Instead they give out Letters of Encouragement (LOE), which do not carry the same level of commitment from West Point as the old LOA did. If you get one it means USMA is impressed with you, but it does not mean they will reserve a seat for you as they would for someone with a LOA.

so how many nominations can your congressional district representative, senators, or the vice president give? Is it also true that there will be no more rolling admissions?

Read the nominations section of this and read here for info about rolling admissions. :thumb:

This is good info.

Keep in mind that that it is possible to recieve nominations from other places. A good summary of the nomination sources is here:

http://www.westpoint.edu/admissions/SitePages/Apply_Nominations.aspx

Additionally, the Superintendent of USMA also has some nominations that he can give out, but the VAST majority of people will not get one of those nominations.

I'm also filling out the sport recruitment Questionnaire and am aware that you still need a nomintion, but am wondering if you become a recruited athlete, how will that affect anything in the appointment process?

Would it be pretty clear if you got a LOE? I got a letter from USMA but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a LOE. I'm not sure though.

If you are going a top recruit then they can help you through the admissions process. They can't do anything as far as noms go, although I'm sure more than a few top recruits got Supe noms, etc.

Edit:

Ligustinus, it would clearly state it in the letter if it was an LOE (ie: Letter of Encouragement would be somewhere in there).

LOE

It will clearly state "letter of encouragement" with an offer to have an over night visit
