Resubmitting NROTC Applicatoin

Is it a generally bad idea to continually submit and unsubmit an NROTC application to make adjustments?

JPJ: I wasn't even aware that was a possibility but...

As near as I can tell, you should complete your application and then submit corrections if necessary. I can't imagine that submitting and then "unsubmitting" would be a good practice and could lead to confusion, multiple copies, errors.

Best to follow the given procedure whenever possible and particularly in the military.

Curious (maybe this is a question for kinnem) does that affect your place in the queue at all (if there is a queue)?

I was not this was a possibility either...

This is the 2nd time through for one of my children and each time they were told not to submit until the recruiter did the final review and then gave the okay.

That said I believe once they did submit they were not able to re-open, edit and submit. Any additional information they needed to add or change was submitted directly to the recruiter, he would make the updates from his end.

I would watch for a comment from Pima, kinnem or a moderator, they might have some better insight. You may even want to contact your recruiter.

I'm with those who were unaware that there was any ability to submit and then unsubmit. To my knowledge, based on DS's experience, once you submit, that's it. Additional updates need to go through recruiting. In our case, we dealt with the brigade level of recruiting command since we were only 15 minutes from HQ. We never worked with what one would normally call a recruiter, at least with respect to the actual application.

They do recommend you review the application with the recruiter prior to submitting. My recollection is that, due to lack of response, we gave up on trying that and simply submitted.

NROTC

I have received my NROTC application back from Regional HQ's two times to make adjustments. From what I have heard, it seems like this would not be an issue because the boards do not begin reviewing the apps until late August, correct?

I think there are 2 explanations here.

The OP did not ask to update it, he was told to fix something, thus they (NROTC) re-opened that portion of his portal. Others were discussing once it was cleared through, it is closed for corrections.

For JPJ has no choice, but to re-submit since NROTC is requiring it.

It is akin to me like the CFA for an SA. Once submitted, only the SA can unlock it.

JPJ, one thing to realize is how boards work. The review board are officers that are on TDY to HQ NROTC for the board. It is a queue system. There is no guarantee that just because your packet is there two days prior to close out date for the board you will be boarded for that board.

If I recall correctly from past yrs., they will not tell you if you have not been boarded, only if you have. Last yr there applicants that had their packet in end of July/beginning Aug. and did not hear from them until Oct.

Meanwhile, the boards were meeting and the units are filling up with each and every board. The faster you submit the correct information they are requesting the sooner your application will be placed in the queue.

This is a great explanation of the process:

"Before offering advice on the college/university placement section, I will take a step back for a moment to familiarize you with how the whole process works. Scholarship selection boards for the Navy meet about a dozen or more times (depending on the total number of applications) throughout the year with the first board usually convening in late August/early September. Marine Corps scholarship selection boards are held in November and February. Each board will review approximately 500 applications and they are reviewed in the order in which they are received. For this reason, you want to make every effort to have all of your application complete by early August so that you will be reviewed as early as possible. By August, there are usually 2,000 to 3,000 applications completed so if you’re just finishing in the September timeframe, you may not be reviewed until several months later. The selection board ―scores‖ all of the applications it reviews based on everything contained in the application and then selects the top hundred or so highest scoring applications. Those not selected are automatically rolled to the next board which would meet about a month later and select another hundred or so applications. In this manner, about 1,800 to 1,900 students will ultimately be selected over the course of the year (the last board meets in April) out of the roughly 8,000 to 10,000 that apply. A twist to add onto this is....the Plan A, B, C world.

Not only will the NROTC board award, but they will not talk to USNA board to see if the candidate was appointed. A majority of SA candidates will apply for ROTC as Plan B. A majority of ROTC cadets will never apply to an SA as Plan B.

It is what the AD world calls "MASKED". NROTC and USNA cannot see the results of each other's board OR if they applied to an SA. A USNA candidate can get picked up NROTC in Sept., and hold onto that scholarship until I-Day (July 2014). As far as NROTC is concerned that money is spoken for come the next board after receiving the candidates acceptance.

IOTW, the money pile was reduced by a lot every time for the SA candidates awaiting SA results. SA world results is called MARCH MASS MAILING. The bulk will not know until March 2014. That is also why NROTC allows transfers come April/May. However, financially it can be a factor for families at that late date, due to deposits for colleges.

Get it in ASAP, but make sure it is strong.

So, Pima, to clarify.... DS was/will be awarded ISR NROTC Scholarship. (Waiting on written notification, already verbally awarded). WHen the packet comes, he will have to formally "accept", correct? Once he accepts, let's say he receives an appointment to USNA or USCGA. At what point does he tell NROTC that he is going the SA route and won't use the scholarship?
