Questions on Re-Organization Week

Dear forum friends,

If any of you have the time and inclination, I'm curious about a few things about this week, which I think is known as Re-Organization Week? I'm a high school teacher who acts as the informal service academy information source at my high school, and I've got two former students whom I taught in the classroom who are members of the Class of 2017. I've been writing my former students throughout the summer (and mobilized other faculty to send notes) and would like to send something this week congratulating them on the Marchback and, from what I understand, the official end to CBT?

I'm not on a listserv because I'm not a parent, so I thought I'd "crowdsource" my question to SA Forums. First, would it be okay to send any sort of CARE package with treats at this point, or should that wait for after Acceptance Day? Second, should I still address the envelopes this week to "New Cadet [Doe]" until Acceptance Day?

Lastly, if anyone is willing, I'm curious how this week works. Are they already with their new companies? Do they have yuk "team leaders" assigned to them yet? Do they basically spend this week moving, getting books, academic gear, and with some training/orientation by the new companies?

Thanks all, both for this and for your patience over the past several years. I served in the Marines but did not go the SA route so this has been invaluable as I try to help some of the kids and families (let alone my colleagues) understand the process.

Although today was the "MarchBack" from CBT, most consider Acceptance day (This saturday) as the official end to beast.

Care packages are welcome and encouraged, but be aware that with the beginning of the academic year comes many cadets buying books/supplies, meaning that package may not be recieved for a little while.

As cadets, we are to refer to the class of 2017 as "New Cadet ___" until the Acceptance day parade this weekend. To be honest, either will work as no one will be checking their packages.


Reorganization Week in the fall is almost what I would equate to a freshman orientation of sorts. The assignment of rooms, books, computers, bank cards, and supplies among many things the plebes will have to do as well as briefs.

I am actually leaving my room in about 10 minutes to go "Greet" my new cadets and welcome them into our company.

This is the last week that new cadets will be escorted everywhere they go, and the first week spent with their new academic companies.

For plebes who get an F on Beast, what happens during reorganization week and beyond? Do they get kicked out?

Let me add how to address packages, whether sent via USPS, FedEx, or UPS (or similar):

Cadet firstname lastname
United States Military Academy
745 Brewerton Road #xxxx
West Point, NY 10997

Where xxxx is their PO Box number. Don't use PO in the address as neither FedEx nor UPS will accept a package with that notation. The Post Office ends up handlng delivery from the Brewerton Road address for all packages to the cadets.

When sending letters, using PO Box xxxx is OK for stamped USPS letters.

If you use some online shipping services the 10997 sometimes may automatically be adjusted to 10996-1062 as the zip. Don't worry, the package will still get there.

As the other post noted, they will become cadets as of A-day, and will be quite busy this week so may not even get to their PO box.

My Firstie son tried to get his packages (textbooks) today, and said it was chaos in the mail room area - way too crowded. So what ever you send may not get picked up for awhile.

Use the Medium or Large flat-rate boxes from the USPS; you can save a little by printing/paying for the mailing label online at usps.com.

Better still is using Amazon to send out snack food, gifts, books, etc. Free economy shipping for most orders totaling over $25. With Amazon Prime, you get 2-day delivery of whatever is ordered and in stock.

Also, always a good idea to add the PO box to the zip as the last four digits.

Yes, include the box number after the zipcode, too; i.e. 10997-xxxx where xxx is the box number.
