Will there be a lot of LOAs givin this year, as they have the early action program?

The air force has never had a LOT of LOA's.

There is nothing new about the "Early Action" program. All they've done was give it an "Official Name" and told applicants about it. Basically, trying to get some applicants to hang in there until January, before accepting other schools.

But if they have an applicant who is part of the "No Brainer's Club", and they happen to get a presidential nomination; the air force academy may still him him/her an actual APPOINTMENT as early as November. Or, if they are in that "No Brainer's club" or are highly desired for other reasons, and their application is 100% complete and they're only waiting for a nomination; the academy may still give them an LOA in November, followed up with an appointment when/if they get their nomination.

LOA's and the "Early Action" program are 2 totally different things. Most people think the academy has been giving out appointments in the April-May time frame every year. Yes, that's when the MAJORITY of appointments go out; and still will. But the academy has been giving out appointments as early as the beginning of November and all the way through January/February. They've been doing that for years and probably still will. With the Early Action program, they're just tryng to motivate candidates to get them to complete their apps early and to hang in there and not ditch the academy for another offer. This isn't anything new. Just now has an official name on it for applicants to read.

Thanks!! What in your opinion is part of the "no brainers club"?
The three sport letter winner, with the 780M, 740CR, 35 Composite ACT, 4.65GPA, #3 in a class of 750, with 800 hours of community service, Eagle Scout/Girl Scout Gold Award, and a part-time job during the off season, who also teaches children to read on Sunday.

Too much?

Thanks Steve. You pretty much nailed it. Just to add, that GPA was in all AP or IB classes and the imidivual was probably class officer on top of all the things flieger wrote. Basically, we aren't talking top 10% of applicants but rather the actual top 20-50 applicants. The ones who also gets accepted to any school they apply to.

It is interesting since my DD is also applying for ROTC and six colleges in addition to AFA, CGA and USNA, I have found out something very interesting, the colleges are hurting, even the big ones, enrollment is down and there are few kids to go around to make the numbers. Now, I dont think AFA has to worry, who wouldnt want to go there. But she is being actively being recruited by each of her colleges she wants to attend. They open with 10-20K for the 32ACT and 4.0 GPA, and yes they are serious top colleges. All the academies are looking for those same kids, one of the admissions people showed the numbers and the top students, which AFA looks for, (This is not a USAF number but from another Ivy League school) there is a universe of only 15,000 nationally. So, its no wonder they put a name to a program.

We are hope full she gets to AFA, it is her #1 choice and with her app now completed and waiting for the nomination, she got everything in and done in 15 days. But she had to there is no time once school starts. Now she is asking her summer employer to give her the nomination early.

I told her she has done alot of work and whatever happens its in Gods hands. I all this Early Action stuff is just marketing, every college is doing it.

Completely insane if you qualify for all the things above.

Mr. Steve, what does 780M and 740CR mean?

Maybe also last name Doolittle, Spaatz or LeMay?

zach, 780M and 740CR are the math and critical reading scores of the SAT respectively.

Zach. Believe it or not, the academy has plenty of cadets who had that type of resume when they were in high school. I know of at least a dozen or more of current and past cadets like that.

That's why it's so difficult to answer the question when applicants ask: "What are my chances". We don't know your competition, and there's applicants like this applying all the time.

My candidate for USAFA/USNA Class of 2016:

Female
Club sports
Class Officer
SAT: 760M, 780CR
ACT: 35 Composite (all 36's except C&R which was, I think, about 31)
4.60GPA
2000+ Hours community service
USAFA Summer Seminar, USMA SLS, USNA Leadership Summer
Girls State
National Merit Scholar
Church Volunteer, Tought children
After school job, bilingual

Had her choice of SA's.

There are LOTS of folks like this at ALL the SA's! I spent 4 years walking around USAFA asking this question:

"HOW DID I GET HERE WITH THESE PEOPLE?!"

High flyers

That is funny Steve, I tell myself the same thing each time I talk to my DS. While he had strong grades and scored a very respectful ACT and had plenty of volunteer service his whole life. No way was he in the bracket you described. Thank God for a fast ball and running the 60 in 6.4 and a coach who followed through on his word as given.

I think it's pretty obvious when you look at every year's class profile. Average GPA is right around 3.86. ACT is around 30. etc... If that's the average, then that means there's got to be quite a few applicants with a 4.0gpa; 34+ACT; 2200+SAT.

That's what makes it so hard for determining who gets an appointment. An applicant who would normally get the MOC State Appointment in 40 states; because their application is that good; could be on the same MOC nomination slate as one of these "No Brainer" kids.

Fortunately, the majority of these really good applicants who also had to compete with a "No Brainer Club" member, usually will get picked up in the National Pool. But sometimes, there's simply not enough slots.
